Spottswood Epes Robinson

CHARLOTTE – S. Epes Robinson, age 82, died peacefully at home on Saturday, January 16, 2021 after a brief illness. Epes was born in Durham, NC to Anne Morris Robinson and Spottswood Bland Robinson.

He attended local schools in Durham and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1959. Epes received a degree from UNC School of Law in 1963 and was an editor of the Law Review. After two years with Jefferson Standard in Greensboro, NC he moved to Charlotte in 1965 to become Assistant General Counsel with American Credit. Epes joined the NCNB Legal department in 1970 and with partner Mike Elliot formed NCNB Venture, a separate entity, in 1986. He and his partner then formed Springdale Venture Partners, LP, which they successfully operated until 1995, when Epes retired. Mike and others in corporate finance describe Epes as a legend in the field.

Epes was a founder of Mecklenburg Aquatic Club and supported the club for several years; served on the Finance Committee for Central Piedmont Community College; served on the Investment Committee for the Foundation for the Carolinas; and was a founding contributor to HopeWay in Charlotte. He was a member of the Charlotte Country Club, the Linville Golf Club, Springdale Hall in Camden, South Carolina, The Piedmont Club and a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church for over 50 years.

Preceding Epes in death were his parents, his sister, Patricia; his first wife, Sally Lee and son Michael Epes, who both died in a tragic automobile accident, his daughter, Maura Suzanne and his grandson, Thomas Mickelson. Epes is survived by his wife, Anne Lobdell Robinson; children, Katherine Mickelson and her husband, Andrew and Hugh Robinson and his wife, Sarah; grandchildren, Alexandria Mickelson, Hayes and Vann Robinson, and Anna Coggins.

When he married his wife Anne nearly 49 years ago, he was embraced by a beloved extended family: sister-in-laws Malinda Allen, Bettie Buck (Steve), Gena Haywood (Robert), and brother-in-law Lewis Lobdell (Kate), as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Epes had a love of the arts, history, and travel. He was known for his curiosity and wide breadth of knowledge. Epes was happiest when his family and friends joined him celebrating life.

His family would like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region for their gentle care at the end of his life.

Epes’s memorial service will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church. Due to Covid restrictions, the service will be private. The service will be livestreamed at: https://myersparkpres.org/live/

    Anne, I am so sorry to hear of Epes passing. I’m so glad I ran into the two of you on a walk in Charlotte the day before his birthday. He told me then he had CHF. I will miss him and am grateful I got to know him over the years.
