Donald W. Metcalfe

January  14, 2021

CHARLOTTE – Donald Weldon Metcalfe passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at the age of 92. He was the son of W. Grady and Erie I. Metcalfe, and he is survived by his wife, Audrey B. Metcalfe; his daughter, Donna M. Evans; his son, Timothy W. Metcalfe; three granddaughters, Molly, Hannah and Haley, and son-in-law Thomas W. Evans; and his brother, G. Gene Metcalfe.

Mr. Metcalfe was born in 1928 in Shelby, North Carolina. He was a proud WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy, and graduated from Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Illinois. He established Quality TV Service in 1953, from which he retired in 1989. Mr. Metcalfe was a member of First Baptist Church for over sixty years, a longtime deacon, and was active in many other aspects of the Church. His belief in God was his guidepost.

Mr. Metcalfe was a loving husband to Audrey Metcalfe for 71 years and they shared a special bond. Mr. Metcalfe was also a caring father to his two children, both of whom adored him. He garnered the nickname “Cuppy” from his granddaughters, to whom he was devoted and, likewise, they were devoted to him. Mr. Metcalfe was also a wonderful and loyal friend to everyone who crossed his path.

Mr. Metcalfe always thought of others before himself; cherished the farm on which he grew up; relished music – masterfully playing the guitar, piano, mandolin and bass; and taught his family to always accept challenges and embrace adventure with equal parts of passion and faith. In the words of his granddaughters, we will miss his hugs beyond words and will forever be grateful for his companionship, life lessons, guidance and intangible gifts throughout his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, at alz.org, in memory, honor and celebration of Don, Dad and Cuppy – our family’s incomparable husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
