Helen Pope Medlin

December 21, 2020

Helen Pope Medlin “Maw Maw” entered into Glory and Eternity with Jesus Christ, peacefully on Monday, December 21, 2020.

Helen never met a stranger. With open arms, a contagious laugh and beautiful smile, she would say "please, call me, Maw Maw" and with her sparkling blue eyes she would say please give me a Hug - "I love you".

Helen was born in Asheville, NC on October 2, 1924. She was the daughter of Flake Reid Pope of Mocksville NC and Effie Elizabeth Page Pope of Spencer NC. Helen was one of seven children, Hazel, Virginia, Louise, Jim, Ray and Betty Pope, all of whom preceded her in death. During the Great Depression, the Pope family moved to Spencer where she and her brothers and sisters grew up and attended Central United Methodist Church.

She lived an extremely active, positive, and determined 96 years of life.

Helen moved to Charlotte, NC during the 40s and worked at the Southern Bakery. Her dream was to own her own restaurant. In the early 50's, she made that dream come true. She owned Helen's Drive-In Restaurant on North Tryon Street." She followed that dream by another dream, purchasing her first home as a single Mom in the 1950’s. Helen became a member of Bible Presbyterian Church in the 60’s and remained a member until the day of her passing. In Helen’s early retirement years, she worked part-time in the cafeteria for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and also sold Avon and Tupperware products to friends, family and members of the community. At 62, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and fought through recovery to live another 34 amazing years. Her life was a testament to her family and friends. Faith, Family, Fun and Hard Work was her way of life. Thank you, Maw Maw, for all of the wonderful memories and showing us how to live a wonderfully full life! We love you!

Helen is survived by her daughter, Charlene Saine Carson and her husband, Doug Carson; sons, Gary Medlin and his wife, Ann and Richard Medlin and his wife, Sherry Medlin. Helen was blessed with and loved her eight grandchildren, Brian Carson and wife, Dina, Michael Carson and wife, Nicole, Mitchell Medlin and wife, Janelle, Josh Medlin, Nick Medlin and wife, Tiffani, Wesley Medlin, Hannah Medlin and Holly Medlin. Helen was beyond blessed with nine great-grandchildren, Chloe Carson, Alex Carson, Karas Carson, Lili Carson, Reagan Carson, Hunter Medlin, Hailey Medlin and Houston Medlin.

We are thankful and blessed to have such a loving Mom and Maw Maw.

Helen will be taken to the National Cemetery in Salisbury and laid to rest next to her husband, Jarman David Medlin in a private family service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Susan G. Komen, Dept. 41831, P.O. Box 650309,

I remember Mrs Medlin from the Bible Presbyterian Church, she was always so sweet, positive and always smiling. She is celebrating and worshipping Jesus now. Her labors, trials and pain are all gone. The Lord bless and comfort all the family. God bless.

We were so blessed to know Helen for 40 years. We have many fond memories of her attending our church through the years. She was known as the Avon lady. Whenever I think of her, I think of a smiling, happy Christian lady!
