Samuel Grier Cochran

February 19, 2018

CHARLOTTE - Samuel Grier Cochran passed away on February 19, 2018 surrounded by loving family and friends.

Sam was born on April 27, 1948 and grew up on over 130 acres in eastern Mecklenburg County that was granted by the King of England to his family in the late 1700’s.  It was on this family farm that Sam developed a love for animals and gardening.

During his high school years, Sam attended the Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia. Upon graduation he spent three years at Western Carolina University until he was called to serve during the war for the US Army as a Spec 4.  Following service to his country, he completed his last year at Western Carolina University and graduated with a B.S./B.A. degree in Marketing Management.

Sam spent his entire career in the real estate industry.  He began as a project manager with W.B. Dillard Construction in Jackson County, NC.  Sam moved back to Charlotte and, with partner Sonny Helms, opened a residential real estate appraisal business where he cultivated many close friendships.  Cochran-Helms Associates thrived, provided great service and became one of the premier appraisal companies in Charlotte.  After 29 years in the appraisal business, Sam made the transition into selling real estate which was a perfect and natural fit for him.  In 2009, he teamed with his former client and long-time friend Meg Wilkinson and built a successful business working for Cottingham Chalk Hayes and then HM Properties where they affiliated in 2016.

Sam had a loving nature, a wonderful sense of humor and was a passionate lifelong sportsman and outdoorsman.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his brother, friends and bird dogs.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Junius and Mary Cochran.  He is survived by his brother Art (Phyllis) Cochran, sister Dixie Cochran, niece Casey (Ben) Unger, nephew Sam (Jamie) Cochran and four grand nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to those who traveled with Sam on this journey over the past years, providing an abundance of love and care: Meg Wilkinson and her family, John, Molly and Sally; Sheryl Hallow; Dr. Reza Nazemzadeh and staff at LCI South Park; and friends at HM Properties, CCH Realtors and many lifelong friends.

Funeral services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte at 10:00 am on Monday, February 26, 2018.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sam’s memory to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at www.pancan.org or Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte NC 28207

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

I only knew Sam briefly when I worked at Dean and Deluca, but he was the kindest person I ever interacted with while I worked there. Though I know very little about him and now live across the country, I think about Sam and his kindness often. This news has shaken me to my core, as I am sure it has for anyone closer to him. My sincerest condolences to his family. May dear, sweet Sam rest in peace.

Sam was my kind, concerned and generous neighbor. We always shared a laugh as we met in our yards.
It is with a sad heart that I mourn your loss.

WE have known Sam for at least 48 years. He was A fine person, he was kind and caring, also a gentle person.
I am sure he will be missed by many. The Norris family has missed him already for several years. He was so much
fun to be around. Always made us laugh. We Loved Sam--he was my favorite Brother in Law, my ONLY Brother in Law.
If I had had 10 brothers in law- he would have still been my favorite!! I pray God will grant peace to the family.
