Christa Lee Anderson Overcash

October 9, 2025

CHARLOTTE – Christa Lee Anderson Overcash passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, October 9, 2025.  Christa was born on June 30, 1926, in North Wilkesboro, NC to George Donley Anderson and Verdie Rhodes Anderson.

After graduating from Mountain View High School in 1944, Christa (also called Chrissy by her grandchildren or Chris by many) graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 and worked there until 1952.  She loved nursing and maintained lifelong friendships with several of her classmates until her passing.  Chris was married to Reece Overcash in 1948, and they were happily married until he passed away in 1995.  They had four children and lived in Gainesville, GA, and Pulaski, VA, settling in Charlotte until 1975.  In 1976, Reece’s work relocated them to Dallas, TX and Chris never failed to make new friends or to get involved in the community.

After Reece passed away, Chris devoted much of her efforts to support education, creating scholarships at UNCC, Central Piedmont Community College, Queens University and Wingate University.  Her generosity also supported Carolinas Healthcare Foundation and the Levine Children’s Hospital, Myers Park Baptist Church, Providence Day School, the Foundation for the Carolinas and UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.

Chris was recognized in 2000 as the “North Carolina Benefactor of the Year” by the Community College Council for Resource Development and honored in 2006 with the Distinguished Service Award from Central Piedmont Community College.

More than her accomplishments, Chris was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  Her last years were filled with many happy times, especially loving visits from the great grandchildren.

The family would like to extend immense thanks to Sharon Hopkins for her devotion and attention to Chris.  The incredible care and love Chris received from Ruby Johnson, Glendene Hylton, Mary Harden, Andrea Lindsey, Ashley Reid, Lerma Hill, Joyce Kitai and Demita Upsher were unequaled and the family is eternally grateful.

Chris is survived by her four children, Kay Overcash Jenkins (Belvie), Mary Ann Overcash (Frank Sanady), Sarah Lee Overcash, and Alex Overcash (Susan) and her five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  Also surviving is her niece, Vicki West and her husband, Boyd.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Reece Overcash, her parents and her brother, George D. Anderson.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Myers Park Baptist Church, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC.  The family will receive friends following the service in the Great Hall.  The service will be livestreamed through the church’s website at: https://vimeo.com/event/5446686 for those unable to attend in person.

Memorials may be offered in Christa’s memory to Memory & Movement Charlotte, 411 Billingsly Rd., Ste.103, Charlotte, NC 28211 or the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606.  Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

I had the pleasure of renting a condo at Selwyn Village from Mr. Overcash for over 13 years. I met Christa and daughter Kay during that time. What lovely people! The Overcash family were very good to me and were excellent landlords. I will always have such fond memories of my time at Selwyn Village and am thankful to have known this family. Kay and family, I am so sorry for the loss of your mother, a beautiful person inside and out.

To the Overcash family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. I had the privilege to meet and speak with Mrs. Overcash at her daughter's Sarah's home on several occasions.
She was warm, friendly and I enjoyed speaking with her very much. She will be missed. May God comfort your hearts in knowing that she now rest in His eternal care.

To know Chris was to love Chris. She displayed such love and generosity to us and the entire Danelski family from the moment we met her until her last. Chris was beautiful and brilliant. She was warm and gracious. Our lives have been so completely blessed with her in them. There will be an empty hole in our hearts until we see her again. There is lots of rejoicing in heaven right now. We love you Chris. Thank you for loving us.
