Mary Catherine Quartapella

June 24, 2025

CHARLOTTE – Mary Catherine Quartapella, 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Born in Philadelphia in 1937, Mary was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend known for her warmth, wit, and generosity.  A lifelong creative spirit, she ran a successful natural foods bakery and café in Texas during the 1980s, where her cooking and entrepreneurial drive made a lasting impression on her community.

Mary was also an extraordinarily talented quilter and a longtime member of the Charlotte Quilters Guild.  Her artistry, attention to detail, and love of craft were visible in every stitch—and her quilts remain cherished gifts to those who received them.

Mary was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and a devoted volunteer at the Dilworth Soup Kitchen. She was a lifelong advocate for kindness, friendship, and good food. Her playful sense of humor and her beloved “momisms” will live on through her family.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Dr. Catharine Goodson of Texas; her son, Andrew Quartapella and wife, Beth of Charlotte, NC; and her grandsons, Timothy Goodson of Ft. Collins, CO, Matthew Goodson of Houston, TX, Michael Quartapella of San Francisco, CA and Nicholas Quartapella of Milwaukee, WI.  Also surviving are her brother, Thomas Cupples and wife, Joanna of Newark, DE and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Catherine and John Cupples, and her brothers, Robert and John all of Philadelphia, PA.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Southminster Retirement Community, 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, NC.  The family will receive friends following the service at Southminster.

Memorials may be offered in memory of Mary to the Dilworth Soup Kitchen, 1200 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203 or via https://www.dilworthsoupkitchen.org/donate.

I loved Mary from the moment I met her. Our passion was quilting and giggling was our fun. She was kind and thoughtful to everyone she met. Truly she will have fun in heaven.

I loved Mary from the moment I met her! Quilting was our language and giggling was our fun time. She was always so personal, we would hold hands when we chatted. She showered everyone with her smile and remembered everyone.
