Helen Floros Fleggas

April 27, 2025

CHARLOTTE – Helen Floros Fleggas, age 102, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025, in Charlotte, NC with family and close friends by her side.  She was born in Orangeburg, SC on May 26, 1922, to the late Gus and Maria Floros.

Helen spent her early years in Macon, Ga before the family moved to Charlotte, NC in 1936. A graduate of Central High School, class of 1940, she spent the war years helping her father at his restaurant, The Court Café, across from the Mecklenburg County Court House.  It was there, she met her future husband, John Fleggas, whose family came from the same small village in the mountains of Greece as her family.  Once married, the couple lived in San Francisco, California for several years before relocating back to Charlotte.  With the sudden and unexpected passing of her husband in 1961, she was left widowed at the age of 39 with the responsibility of raising and providing for her two sons, ages 13 and 9.  She went back to school to sharpen her skills as a secretary and re-entered the workforce working for Central Motor Lines and later with Coca-Cola as an Executive Secretary until her retirement.  By all standards she did an excellent job of raising her sons through dedication and sacrifice with faith and trust in God, providing a good foundation in the Greek Orthodox faith and seeing both complete their education with college degrees and established careers.

A woman of great faith and love for God, the Greek Orthodox Church was a very important part of her life.  The Dormition of the Theotokos, celebrated on August 15, was a special day to her. She was active in the church in her teen years, a member of the Estia Club and later in the Philoptochos Society.

Helen is survived by her son, Speros Fleggas and his wife, Patricia of Raleigh, NC; grandson, John Fleggas and granddaughter, Elena Fleggas, both of Raleigh, NC and great-grandsons, Speros and Niko Fleggas.  Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews in North and South Carolina and in Greece.  She was predeceased by her husband, John Fleggas; son, Gus Fleggas; brothers, Jimmy Floros of Beaufort SC, Spiro Floros of Charlotte, NC, and Nick Floros of Asheville, NC; sisters, Katherine Anastes of Greenville, SC and Sula Morrow of Charlotte, NC.

The family would like to acknowledge and give thanks to Olga Kleto, and Helen Clonaris for the special attention and care they gave Helen in her later years.  Additionally, the family wants to thank cousins, Anna Koufaliotis, Lula Andrews, and Helen Douglas, and friends, Kay Keziah and Tassie Mandanis.  Her neighbor and good friend Ronnie Pourlos was always there for support and encouragement.

The family would also like to thank the nursing and other support staff of Via Health Partners who cared for Helen during the last year of her life and especially the staff of Sunrise on Providence.  She developed a special relationship with Genet, who spoke excellent Greek, and Yenenesh.  May God bless them all for their hard work and dedication in looking after family members as they age and need special assistance.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Charlotte.  Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Cathedral Foundation, 600 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203.

May Her Memory Be Eternal.
