Lucia Anne Tompkins

March 27, 2025
CHARLOTTE - After a life well-lived, our beloved sister, aunt, and friend Lucia Anne Tompkins passed away March 27, 2025, at Atrium Pineville Hospital in Charlotte, N.C. Born on August 11, 1951, Lucia loved to take her family on summer vacations to the Isle of Palms and her birthplace of Charleston, S.C.
Lucia was a bright, disciplined student who excelled in both math and English courses. Lucia graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in the top ten students of her graduating class. After high school, Lucia attended UNC Charlotte from 1969–1973, where she frequently made the Dean’s list. She was a dedicated Alpha Delta Pi and enjoyed lifelong friendships with her best friends from college, Pat Cox and Peachy Boyd. Lucia transitioned from her humanities degree to the insurance industry and excelled in her career.
Lucia’s last position was as a Regional Business Executive with Eastern Alliance. She opened the Southeast Region for the company in 2007 and retired in March 2017. Lucia loved her job, especially her Eastern Alliance colleagues.
Goddaughter Scottie and godsons Bill and Tom were dear to Lucia. Scottie was at Lucia’s side every day through her illness.
Lucia forged deep and lasting relationships with her traveling companions Joanna Silver, Kitty Rowell, and Kate Kiefer. Lucia also loved her neighbors and friends, who brought meals for her when she returned home from the hospital. Next-door neighbors Yvonne and George took care of her and her house when she was away.
Lucia loved spending more quality time with her loved ones during her retirement. She loved her sister Joye, her namesake niece Lucia Palmer, her son-in-law Wes, and her “Sweets” (great niece Quinn), who named her Gal (Great Aunt Lucia). Lucia’s last family beach trip included little Quinn, who loved to say, “I love you, Gal.”
Her survivors will always keep a sacred space in their hearts for their beloved Lucia and Gal.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 4, 2025, at Covenant Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church, and then at Lucia's home thereafter.
