Mary Ellen Stover

February 14, 2025
CHARLOTTE – Mary Ellen Stover, 84, of Purcellville, VA peacefully joined her Lord and Savior on Valentine’s Day 2025, at The Sanctuary-Quail Hunt in Charlotte, NC, surrounded by family and her devoted caregivers.
Mary Ellen was born and raised in Washington, NJ, to the late Edward and Dorothy Stover. She was the oldest of four children and is survived by her three brothers, Thomas Stover, Richard Stover and Edward Stover. She is also survived by her five loving children, Kathleen (Nelson) Blackburn, Arnold (Patricia) Howell, Lisa (Michael) Shea, Wayne Shelton, and Marcie (Robert) Haines. In addition, she leaves behind eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mary Ellen found her greatest joy in sharing the Gospel, her family, Joes Pond, traveling the world, her antique business and cooking. She was a scholar in all that she did. She had a great sense of humor with an infectious laugh that carried throughout the room and brought smiles to those around her. Her advice was “keep humor in the family and laugh a lot.”
Passionate about antiques, Mary Ellen Stover Antiques was a staple in the town she called home for close to 40 years. She was very active in local politics, making every effort to help keep Purcellville the small quaint town it was meant to be. Joes Pond, VT was her second home, and she would take every opportunity to be outdoors enjoying God’s country.
Mary Ellen was a devoted Christian and evangelist who loved her church family around the globe and her church home, Winchester Baptist. As a missionary, she served all over the world, from her Loudoun County community to countries as far away as Mongolia.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at The Sanctuary-Quail Hunt for their love, care and support over the past 3.5 years. You were a true blessing, and we will forever be grateful that “Mary” was under your care.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Purcellville Baptist Church, in Purcellville, VA.
Her greatest desire for her loved ones was to gain eternal salvation through Christ our Lord, and to greet you all in Heaven.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Via Health Partners (formerly Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region), 7845 Little Ave, Charlotte, NC 28226 (https://www.viahp.org) or Memory & Movement Charlotte, 411 Billingsley Rd., Suite 103, Charlotte, NC 28211. My condolences to all the family. I also lived next door to Mary Ellen in Washington, NJ, I am Elaine Rush's sister. We had a wonderful neighborhood and our families were close friends. I used to babysit for Mary Ellen!
I have fond memories of watching TV in the Summertime out on their large screened in porch.
I had lost touch with Mary Ellen over the years but it seems like she has a wonderful family and had an exciting and fulfilling life. May she rest on peace. -
I loved MaryEllen from the first time I met here. She had an infectious laugh and we traveled to many cities laughing as we went. She was very dear to both myself and my husband John and the three of met often for dinner at our house or hers. John and I were blessed to spend time with her at Joes Pond. When I got word of her passing I cried because I would not see her again on this world, but also felt such joy as she was now in the presence of the Lord, and she loved the Lord with her whole heart.
