Charles Alexander Porter II M.D.

January 17, 2025
Dr. Charles Alexander Porter, II passed away peacefully, with his devoted wife at his bedside, January 17, 2025, at Matthews Glen. He was born on May 25, 1940, in Charlotte, NC, son of Charles Alexander Porter, Sr. and Corille Avant Porter. Charles graduated from Myers Park High School (class of 1958) in Charlotte and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill in 1962. He attended medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1966.
Charles served his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia where he was Chief Resident of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Upon completing his residency, he served as a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1970-1972 stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
He returned to Charlotte, NC in 1972 and entered the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology with Dr. Christopher K. Hood and Dr. William Eubanks. In 1989, he joined the practice of Mintview OB-GYN Associates where he practiced until his retirement in 2010. Charles was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a member of the NC Medical Society, and the Mecklenburg County Medical Society. He served on the medical staff of Presbyterian Hospital (now Novant HealthCare), Mercy Hospital, and Carolinas Medical Center (now Atrium Health). He was extremely privileged to have practiced his chosen field of medicine for 38 years. He was grateful to his patients, hospital and office staff, colleagues and nurses for their loyalty and friendship through the years. Charles loved what he did and took enormous pride in that he cared for generations of patients within the same family.
Charlie loved his family and fondly remembered annual family excursions to Sparta to cut down fresh Christmas trees; memorable holiday dinners and celebrations; and attending the sporting events of his grandchildren. He appreciated dining at favorite restaurants with good friends and always cheering on his beloved Carolina Tar Heels. He loved traveling—the Alaskan cruises being his favorite. He felt blessed to live in North Carolina with near proximity to the coast and mountains where he and Marilyn traveled often-- Hilton Head, Charleston, Savannah, and Asheville. Asheville, with its beauty, tranquility, and welcoming people captured their hearts and prompted their move there following his retirement. There they became active members of First Baptist Church of Asheville where they have retained their church membership.
Charlie had a deep spiritual faith and a servant’s heart. As a young boy, he attended Covenant Presbyterian Church here in Charlotte. As an adult, he was a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday school and served on various church committees. In 2012, he moved his membership to Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church (now Pritchard at South End) where he continued teaching the HIS Sunday school class and served as Deacon Chair. He served as a facilitator for Community Bible Study. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and helped in building affordable housing. (He was known for his house painting skills!) In Asheville, he volunteered at the Manna Food Bank to help end hunger in Western North Carolina. Charlie was generous and charitable. It was not uncommon for him to slip money to someone who was down in their luck or to an individual who needed a meal. He took delight in discreetly picking up the tab in restaurants for police officers and other first responders who were grabbing a meal while on duty. He received great personal gratification in quietly doing random acts of kindness for others He was admired and appreciated by his friends for his generosity, loyalty, and willingness to always be available during challenging times.
Charlie was preceded in death by his sisters Carolyn Porter Darnell and husband, Ira G. “Frosty” Darnell, and Ruth Porter Hood and husband, Dr. Christopher K. Hood. He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn Kissiah Porter; three sons by a first marriage: Charles Porter, III and wife Jennifer; Ed Porter and wife Kathy; and Chris Porter and wife Amber, all of Charlotte, NC. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren: Chuck Porter (Thomas), Bobby Porter (Emily), Stephen Porter (Madison), Becky Porter Wilson (Barry); Katie Porter Page (Quincy), Kelsey Porter Berry (Joel), Emerson Porter, Jake Porter; Ella, Ava, and Jack Porter. He also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren.
The family will have a private celebration of life service to honor Charlie.
Memorials may be made in memory of Charlie to the following: First Baptist Church of Asheville, 5 Oak Street, Asheville, NC 28801 or to Pritchard at South End, 1117 South Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203.

Dr. Charles Porter was indeed a special person. Charlie was my greatest mentor at Mintview OB/GYN, always providing me calming guidance in the midst of a difficult surgery or a challenging delivery. We would frequently spend time in his office at the end of our long days discussing difficult cases, but more importantly just discussing life in general and the twists and turns it takes. He taught me the importance of compassion for people from all walks of life. He was always there to lend an ear, and he did so in a nonjudgmental fashion. And as many of you know, Dr Porter was a brilliant storyteller and always had a tale or joke to lighten everyone's day. He was admired and loved by his patients, many of whom still see me today and inquire about him. My deepest condolences to the Porter family. I know Charlie is enjoying time upstairs and making everyone laugh and smile. R.I.P. to a legend, Dr Charles A. Porter.
