George Ennis

November 28, 2024

George Ennis, aged 80, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at Southminster Hospice House on November 28, 2024, with his devoted wife, Barbara, by his side. Born on June 22, 1944, in Raleigh, North Carolina, to the late Felton Everette Ennis and Cleo (Hill) Ennis, George was a man whose life was marked by deep friendships and a profound love for his family.

George's early years in Raleigh were filled with the joy of forming lifelong friendships, bonds that he cherished and maintained throughout his life. After graduating from Needham Broughton High School, George answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps. His seven years of service were a testament to his dedication and patriotism, and upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Raleigh, reuniting with his family and friends.

In the early 1970s, George embarked on a new chapter by moving to Charlotte, where he managed The Aztec Lounge, a vibrant live music venue on Independence Boulevard. His tenure at The Aztec was marked by his ability to bring in renowned musicians such as Chubby Checker and Fats Domino, showcasing his knack for recognizing and promoting talent. However, George's career path took a turn as he ventured into the food industry, where he made a significant impact by opening numerous Bojangles restaurants throughout the Carolinas. His passion for food and hospitality was evident in his successful management of several restaurants in the Charlotte area, most notably was The Smokehouse on Wilkinson Blvd.

George's love for music and dance was a defining aspect of his life. He was an active member of the Shag community in both Charlotte and North Myrtle Beach, where he found joy and camaraderie. His contributions to the community were recognized in 2011 when he was inducted into the Charlotte Area Shaggers Hall of Fame. Many evenings were spent at Lynn's Dance Club in Charlotte, where George's presence was a constant source of energy and enthusiasm.

George's personal life was enriched by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Harton (Richardson) Ennis, with whom he recently renewed their wedding vows on October 12, just days after celebrating their nineteenth anniversary. His children, Kimberly Montanari (Tony) of Simpsonville, South Carolina, and Ryan Ennis of Charlotte, were a source of immense pride and joy. George's grandchildren, Dante, Sophia, and Nicolas Montanari of Simpsonville, along with Eva and Niko Ennis of Charlotte, held a special place in his heart, always bringing a twinkle to his eyes.

George is also survived by his sister, Jean (Eugene) Williams of Apex, North Carolina, and his cherished cousin, Effie Jackson of Raleigh. His life was further enriched by the many friendships he cultivated over the years, particularly with Norfleet Jones and the late Stewart Wilson, both of Raleigh. Sadly, George was predeceased by his younger brother, Tommy.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of George Ennis will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at Unity Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill, South Carolina. George's legacy of love, friendship, and dedication to his passions will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
