October 5, 2024

Charlotte native Gay Short Patterson, 74, died October 5, 2024 in Charlotte after a prolonged illness. Gay was predeceased by her mother, “Veegie” Short and father, H. Milton Short, Jr. Growing up in Charlotte, Gay spent many happy years enjoying the smaller city that Charlotte was in the 50’s and 60’s. She and her cousins would spend summer vacations at the Ocean Forest in Myrtle Beach and Litchfield Beach where all would become one with the sand, ocean and sunshine. She attended public schools in Charlotte, matriculating to Sullins College after graduating from Myers Park High School and later transferring and graduating from USC in 1971.

Memories of summers at the beach led her determined adventurous spirit to the West coast to explore living near another body of water. It was there Gay was trained as a senior corporate paralegal working in legal departments for such giants as Visa Corporation and Duke Energy for over 30 years.

Gay was an avid fan of the Carolina Panthers, all types of dogs, needle point, design & architecture, laughter with friends, lunch celebrations, shopping for shoes and Democrats.

A memorial service at Myers Park Baptist Church will be held in the chancel at 11:00 am on October 31, 2024. Interment in the church Columbarium will follow the service. Gay’s family and friends are welcome to come together in celebration of her life at a 1:00 PM lunch at Napa Restaurant following the service. Gay is survived by her brother, Hal (Mary Beth), Stewart and Short cousins, and her caretaking family Carol and Richard Pearsall and long-time friends Becky Edwards Denmark and Mary Howren Howerton.

I became friends with Gay when she worked for Visa and we kept in touch after we both left Visa. She was a kind, caring friend who is missed.
