Rosa “Newley” Lindsey
August 16, 2024
Rosa Nell “Newley” Akre Lindsey, 88, entered the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, August 16, 2024.
Born on August 11, 1936, to Colonel Roland Ogden Strand Akre and Elizabeth Cutler Akre, she moved around frequently in her youth due to her father’s various military posts. One of those posts happened to be in Pearl Harbor during the December 7, 1941, bombing. She and her family were unharmed, and years later, Newley graduated from high school in northern Virginia. She attended Mary Washington College and transferred to The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she earned a degree in nursing and was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She practiced for a few years in Chapel Hill until she married and became a homemaker. A gifted artist, she was known for her watercolor paintings, Christmas topiaries, trees, and many other creative endeavors. A founding member of the Angel Ministry of Calvary Church, she and a group of friends created signature angels in her home studio as gifts of encouragement for others. She also taught Sunday School at Calvary, where she and her husband, Bob, have been members for more than 40 years. The care and attention she and her husband provided for her developmentally disabled adult daughter was also a ministry in her life.
Newley is survived by her husband of 42 years, Robert L. Lindsey, Jr. “Bob”, her daughters Jane Gerdes and Amy Gerdes Philipp (Keith), her grandchildren, Anna Blythe “AB” and Ford, and the following family members: Robert L. Lindsey, III (Roni) and his children Grayson, Rob, and Sidney, and Carson Lindsey Fitzgerald and her children, Will, Carter, and Hunter. Additionally, she is survived by her brother, Roland Akre (Glenda), his sons, Eric and Neil, and their families.
The family is grateful for the care and support of friends, especially Mary Lou Piatt and Ann Stanley.
A celebration of Newley’s life will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 24, 2024, in the chapel of Calvary Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Church, 5801 Pineville-Matthews Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.
