August 10, 2024
CHARLOTTE- Joseph Vincent Kuhlmann died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Saturday, August 10, 2024 in Charlotte, NC.
Joe was born in New York City to Jane and Joseph Kuhlmann on October 21, 1942. Upon graduating from high school, he worked for his family at their food distributorship, before enlisting in the US Navy where he achieved the rank of CWO4. Joe honorably served as an enlisted sailor, a reservist, and as a commissioned warrant officer for over 39 years combined.
He met his wife, Linda, on a blind date, in upstate NY in 1962, they married in May of 1965. Their 59 years together saw many adventures, assignments, and travel around the world. Some of his favorite places traveled to were Ireland, Bali, Germany, Alaska, and most recently Greece. Joe’s naval career took him to ports around the world, but his favorite duty assignment was in Illinois at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He proudly served as the Director of the Electronics Technician “A” School. Joe excelled at encouraging young sailors, and young folks in general, most notably, his own children and grandchildren.
Although he was “usually” the quiet one in the room, Joe's sense of humor and gentle presence will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Linda, and his children, Lyn Good-Soule and her husband, Jeff, Lycia Rettig and her husband, Ben, Joey Kuhlmann and his fiancé, Dani. Also missing their “Pop” are grandson, RJ Good and his wife, Margaret, granddaughter, Bekah, granddaughter, Emily and her fiancé Daniel, and bonus granddaughter, Misty. Pop recently became a great-grandfather to River (Misty) and Jamie (RJ). Also surviving is Joe’s sister, Joyanne Barroso and her husband, Peter, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held at the Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC followed by a celebration of Joe’s life at The Evening Muse in Charlotte, NC. Details will be provided to friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Joe to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306 or via t2t.org.
