Robert Carroll Thomas

July 29. 2024

Robert “Carroll” Thomas was called home by our Heavenly Father on July 29, 2024, with his loving family at his bedside. He was born in Marshville, NC to the late Robert F. and Louise Helms Thomas but was a longtime resident of Charlotte. As a graduate of Harding High School, Carroll played an instrumental role in the team winning two consecutive state football championships. Over the years, Caroll continued to show his pride in the Rams while serving as a dedicated leader of the Harding Alumni Association where he had many dear friends.

Carroll enjoyed a 45-year career in the banking industry, beginning in the mail room of Wachovia Bank, and culminating in senior leadership responsibilities as Senior Vice President of the Corporate Banking Group at Southern National Bank and BB&T during the last 21 years of his tenure. He retired in 1999 but continued as a sales and marketing consultant for numerous companies. He was a treasured friend and valued mentor to many in his profession, and taught banking courses at Central Piedmont Community College for a number of years. Many of his professional acquaintances became personal friends and golfing buddies during and after his retirement. Carroll valued his friendships tremendously.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Carroll enjoyed being an active member of Sharon Presbyterian Church, Carmel Country Club, and several civic organizations. Carroll loved his Lord and his family and invested his life in them. He is survived by his dearly beloved wife of 66 years Martha Jane; children, Chris Thomas (Jane), Greg Thomas, and Meredith Thomas Tidwell (Mike); grandchildren, Katherine, Vance, Jack and Benjamin; great-granddaughter, Sutton, and a host of cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews with whom he was very close. Carroll was preceded in death by his brother Max A. Thomas.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Sharon Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Esther Brown Music Fund at Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Road, Charlotte, NC 28210.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28204 (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

Our thoughts are with the Thomas family. I had the opportunity to work with Mr. Thomas at First Citizens Bank many years ago. I always found him to be a kind person. His son, Chris was a delightful man and Carroll was very proud of his accomplishments. I am sure he will be missed by many friends and family.May peace be with all of you.
