CHARLOTTE – Mary Elizabeth Hutchinson Astin, 96, of Charlotte, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died peacefully on Saturday, July 13, 2024.  She was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Bertie Benfield Hutchinson.

A native of Charlotte, Lib graduated from Central High School in 1946 and from WCUNC in Greensboro in 1950.  After graduation she spent one year at Carolina College of Health Sciences at Charlotte Memorial Hospital studying Medical Technology.  She worked as a medical technologist at Presbyterian Hospital and later at Mecklenburg OB-GYN for many years in a profession that gave her great joy.

Lib married Thomas Wills Astin in 1952. They raised three daughters together.  She served in many roles at Covenant Presbyterian Church from its inception, worked in her daughters’ schools and served in many community roles. 

Lib is survived by her three daughters and their families, Leslie A. DuVall (Randy) and their daughters, Stephanie Grissom and Jacquelyn DuVall; Julie A. Wayne (Terry) and their sons, David and Thomas; and Amie A. Housley and her sons, Astin, Coleman, Corbin, Wyatt, and Miles.  She is also survived by her three great-granddaughters.  Lib was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Covenant Presbyterian Church. The family asks that attendees wear something colorful to celebrate Lib’s life spirit. The family will receive friends in the Welcome Center following the service.
