Georgia Skenteris Mantekas

April 26, 2024

CHARLOTTE – Mrs. Georgia Skenteris Mantekas passed into the hands of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, April 26, 2024.  Georgia was born on March 15, 1934, in Stenoma (Evrytania), Greece to the late Konstantinos and Fotini Lazos Skenteris into a family of eight siblings, three brothers and five sisters.

Georgia met and married the love of her life Sotirios Konstantinos Mantekas on November 24, 1957, and together they had three children.  In 1973, the family immigrated to the United States from Greece where they settled and lived in Fayetteville, NC until 1984 when they permanently settled in Matthews, NC.  Georgia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and passionate about her Greek Orthodox faith where you would see her attending church services at St Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral and Panagia Prousiotissa Chapel at Elatos Park.  Georgia was the matriarch of the family, soft spoken, kindhearted, good humored, always with kind words and always giving her blessings to all.  She especially cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she would often sing Greek rhymes to them when they were younger.

Georgia will be greatly missed by all who knew her, most especially her grandchildren. The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors and nurses of Novant Health Matthews Medical Center; her primary care physician of many years, Dr. Peter Copsis; the staff of The Pavilion Health Center at Brightmore and numerous friends and relatives who visited and comforted her the last few weeks.

Georgia is survived by her children, Konstantinos S. Mantekas of Matthews, NC, Faye Karanikas-Martin and her husband, Ken of  Charlotte, NC, Demetra M Tassios and her husband, John of Marvin, NC; seven grandchildren, Jessica K. Mantekas, Sotirios K. Mantekas, Dr. Hristos S. Karanikas, George S. Karanikas and his wife, Kristen, Katerina K. Estrada and her husband, Steven, Georgios J. Tassios, Sotirios J. Tassios and three great-grandchildren, Mia Faye Karanikas, Nora Jane Karanikas, Gabriel Carlos Estrada.  Also surviving are her two sisters, Presbytera Noula Skenteris Vlahos of Charlotte, NC and Cleo Skenteris Stathopoulos of Stenoma, Greece.  She was preceded in death by her late husband of 62 years, Sotirios K Mantekas; her three brothers, Pete K. Skenteris, George K. Skenteris of Fayetteville, NC, Arthur K Skenteris of Stenoma Greece; her three sisters, Petroula Skenteris Kalevas of Fayetteville NC, Angela Skenteris Kotsokalis and Xanthi Skenteris Kalevas both of Charlotte, NC.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Georgia to St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church, 5108 Kuykendall Road, Charlotte, NC 28270, or Panagia Prousiotissa Chapel at Elatos Park, PO Box 77114, Charlotte, NC 28271 or Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 600 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203.

May Her Memory Be Eternal.
