Ned Allen Stiles
February 26, 2024
CHARLOTTE – Ned Allen Stiles, 71, passed away on Monday February 26, 2024.
Ned was born July 21, 1952, in Maysville, KY, to the late Andrew Jackson Stiles, III and Joyce Gregory Stiles. He was raised in numerous locations around the United States and in Panama before settling down in North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, earned a law degree from Wake Forest University, and moved to Charlotte where he worked in private practice for more than four decades, including 24 years as a founding partner of Stiles Byrum & Horne, LLP.
As an attorney Ned was admired by colleagues and adversaries. As a man he was admired by all. He worked hard, but family and friendships were the things he valued above all else. He was a proud father who loved watching his children play sports. A gifted athlete himself, he devoted countless hours as a coach, mentor, and fan. He was at his happiest hitting fly balls to his son at Freedom Park late into the evening or walking nine holes with his daughter at Myers Park Country Club. Off the playing field he was just as supportive of his children’s endeavors. He doted on the little ones who called him “G-Dad” and who, per his diligent instruction, have mastered the high five.
Ned, aka “Wo,” enjoyed an assemblage of close friends dating back to his years at UNC. He shared endless laughs in their company on golf courses from Charlotte to Scotland, at weddings across the country, and on road trips to watch the Tar Heels win when they should have lost and lose when they should have won. He was a loyal companion who always kept in touch. We have all lost a best friend.
Ned is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Malinda Brownlee Stiles; son, Andrew Stiles, and wife Jenna of Charlotte; daughter, Megan Stiles Lyford and husband Andrew of Melbourne, FL; and three grandchildren: Benjamin Lyford, Ella Lyford, and Jack Stiles. He is also survived by two sisters, Lynne Stiles of Chester, CT, and Margaret “Peggy” Johnson of Ft. Mitchell, KY.
A memorial service for Ned will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 1, 2024, at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Ned to a charity of their choice.
Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

Wow, I honestly am not sure where to start. I worked for Ned as his legal secretary for over 20 years. Working with someone for that long you pretty much know what they are going to do before they do it. 4:30 was Ned’s favorite time of day since I was supposed to leave at 5:00 but I for the most part I would stay and get done what he needed. Ned was always there to support me in any way he could when my family went through health issues, including when my daddy passed. I just emailed with him a few weeks before and he was bragging on his grandbabies. My heart was broken when I received the news that he had passed. Malinda, Andrew and Megan I know this is a difficult time. You are all in my prayers. RIP Ned, your work on earth is done.

Wow. I just learned of Ned's passing. I am blown away.
I can't describe how beloved Ned was to all who were around him. Ned was one of my roommates in law school, and was without doubt one of the smartest, clever and genuinely funny guys I ever met. A great friend. A great lawyer. I could go on and on. Ned will be missed.

My heart goes out to Ned's family. He was a very good attorney, a good travel companion and a great teammate in the bar softball league . I enjoyed working on a LOT of cases with Ned over more than three decades and I most admired how he never talked down to anybody, was courteous to everyone. He will be missed.

Sadly, good friends sometimes lose contact. Ned was one of my best friends in high school. We enjoyed many great times on the basketball court at the Durham YMCA, and playing cards at lunchtime in the cafeteria; not to mention many memorable parties. Throughout all of our interactions Ned was always smart, funny, and happy and kind. I cannot recall ever seeing him angry or act meanly towards anyone. I'm sure that's why his obituary indicates that continued trend throughout his life. I wish I had had a chance to play golf with him, and to have kept in touch more than a few phone calls. He had a great life and I'm happy for him. Rest in peace, Ned.
