Howard Craig Sharpe, Jr.

December 5, 2023

Howard Craig Sharpe, Jr. died December 5, 2023. He was the only son of Howard and Louise Sharpe of Charlotte, NC. Craig attended Paw Creek Elementary, Coulwood Junior High and graduated West Mecklenburg High School in 1971.  After attending Brevard Junior College, he graduated from Belmont Abbey College in 1975 in Belmont, NC.  Craig grew up in Moores Chapel Methodist Church and later became a member of Paw Creek Presbyterian Church when his parent moved to Enwood Drive in Coulwood.

Craig was an avid tennis player and played on the West Mecklenburg High School team as well as the team at Brevard College. Tennis continued to be an important part of his life as he spent countless hours working with high school tennis players in the Fort Mill area.

Craig continued the real estate business his dad had started and was involved in many different business endeavors throughout his life time. At one time he was involved in making movies in the Charlotte area and helped to film a horror movie at his home known as the "Sadler Homeplace" on Moore's Chapel Road, an old manner house.

Craig was rich with good, loyal friends and had a soothing manner about him. Always friendly and fiercely loyal to his friends. He will be missed and fondly remembered.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, January 12, 2024 at Paw Creek Presbyterian Church.

It's been years since I spoke to Craig, and I just accidentally found his name and phone numbers in some old papers I was going through. I googled his name, and was surprised to find that he had passed, as when we met on the Springs tennis courts we were a lot younger, and that's how I remember him.
We played a lot of tennis against each other, and our matches were a lot of fun, because our skill levels were close to the same. We lost touch when I quit playing at Springs, moving to the Weddington Swim & Racquet club. I've thought about contacting him a couple of times in recent years. I'm sorry I missed doing so.

I played a lot of tennis with Craig in the 1970’s and a bit in the 80’s. Craig was a good athlete, and new all facets of the game. Craig not only talked about the game, but was a good listener, and could coach. Off the court Craig was friendly and caring. He’ll be missed.

I was blessed to have had Craig Sharpe not only as a friend and landlord, but as the Best Man at my wedding, to the former Miss Toni-Lynn Oxley in February 1991. I met Craig in the late 1980's in Charlotte, NC due to our shared interest in live music. I was a working musician and eventually rented a room in a house Craig owned, and lived there nearly two years.
Craig expressed his knowledge and enthusiasm for tennis and video creation and we developed an easy friendship. Naturally, on my wedding day he appeared in several of my wedding photos at Forest Hill Church in Charlotte. Renting a room from Craig came at a critical time in my ever-changing work schedule and I was glad we got along like old friends from the beginning.

Grew up with Craig as a closeby Enwood Drive neighbor in Coulwood Hills. Though I lost contact with Craig after ninth grade at Coulwood Junior High I remember getting together with other neighborhood kids at Craig's house, spending hours on end playing ping pong, shooting hoops, sledding down hill in front of his house. Craig was always laid back, and fun to be with as a kid in the 60's, always smiling and being a good friend to everyone he knew.
My condolences to his family and friends.
