Gene Walker King

CHARLOTTE – Gene (Dolly) Walker King of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully on Monday, December 25, 2023, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.  She was born on June 13, 1944, to the late Dr. John Barrett Walker, Jr. and Carleise (Piggy) Coyner Walker in Richmond, VA.

Dolly grew up in Burlington, NC graduating from Walter Williams High School before studying English at Elon College (now Elon University).  After graduation she married her college sweetheart James Donald (Don) King, Sr. and they had two wonderful children, James (Jim) Donald King, Jr. and Ruth King Fielden.  Dolly was the life of the party and the backbone of the family.  She enjoyed lunch and shopping with her dear friends, spending time with family and ensuring everyone around her was having a good time.  Dolly and Don were active members of the Cross Talkers Sunday School Class at Providence United Methodist Church.  Following Don’s death, Dolly became a Stephen Minister giving spiritual aid to those in need and with health issues.

Dolly is survived by her son, Jim King and his wife, Kelly; daughter, Ruth Fielden and her husband, Kevin; grandchildren, Katie Burth and her husband, Josh, Jamie King, and Samatha Fielden and great-grandchildren, Khloe and Beau Burth.  Also surviving are her brother, Dr. J. B. (Johnny) Walker, III and sister, Patty Scotten.  She was predeceased by her husband, Don.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 29, 2023, at Providence United Methodist Church.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Dolly to Providence United Methodist Church, Attn: Youth Ministries, 2810 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211.
