Alda Tansill

November 15, 2023

CHARLOTTE – Alda Tansill, 99, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2023, surrounded by her children. She was born in Rocky Mount, NC to Norwood and Grace Fonville.

Alda met and later married Harold Tansill in Fayetteville, NC on October 6, 1946 and shared 47 years of marriage. As an only child, Alda wanted a family of children so her children would have siblings.   Not surprisingly, Alda and Harold raised a family of four children.

While raising her children, she returned to work part time at the corporate office of Exxon in Charlotte. Due to Exxon’s relocation out of Charlotte, she continued to work in various administrative and retail roles until her early 80’s. For pleasure, she enjoyed working in the yard, shopping, playing bridge weekly, and attending monthly senior adult fellowship luncheons and the quarterly Charlotte Exxon Annuitant gatherings.

Alda was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and a faithful member of Calvary Church in Charlotte for more than thirty years. She enjoyed her Pilgrims in Progress (P.I.P.) Adult Sunday School class, Women Bible Studies and senior adult travel and social events.

Alda was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by her two sons and two daughters: Bryan (Annie) Tansill, Grace (Tommy) Toler, Ruth Tansill, and Robert (Joy) Tansill. She was blessed with seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Our Mom adored and was comforted by Spot, her “hopelessly devoted” companion and feline caregiver up until her final moments. The family wishes to thank Dr. Erica Bono MD for her compassionate and personalized health care for many years as well as the home health services, Honest Home Care and CarePoint for their excellent staff resources and Greater Charlotte Hospice for providing excellent care, guidance, and oversight during the last weeks of Alda’s life.

The family request memorials be sent either to Calvary Church at 5801 Pineville- Matthews, Charlotte Nc 28226 or CMPD Animal Care and Control at 8315 Byrum Drive, Charlotte NC 28217.

Services will be private.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28204 (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

Alda was an absolute joy. She was kind, caring, and funny. I had the pleasure of meeting her lovely daughter Ruth at The Cove in 1993. In 1995 when I was in training in Charlotte, Ruth and Alda had me and my mother over for dinner. My husband and I also had the pleasure of being with Alda and Ruth at The Cove at a later time. Our prayers are with the family. Thankfully, we will see her again (2 Cor. 5:6-8). She will be sorely missed.
    Love and prayers,
    Gail and Eddie Brown

Ruth, Thanks for sending Us a copy of your Mom's obituary. Such a long time Friend of Our Family which I did not remember all the way back to Fayetteville(where I was adopted in 1949). As I've been away from living in Charlotte since 1971, living in Chicago, New York, and now 46 years near San Francisco, having been back & forth many times to visit our Friends & Relatives for years, Alda spent time with my Mother after my Father's passing, so our Family has lost a very close Friend.

What an inspiration Alda was at the age of 99! We will never forget her feisty wit and welcoming embrace whenever we would visit. Always a greeting at the front door, followed by a prompt invite to sit for a spell. A great flair for fashion and an avid bridge player,…the lady was just fun to converse with! Thank you for all the laughs and advice over the years. You will be greatly missed Alda. We love you and your family. Fly high sweet angel.
    Love & Sympathy,
