Delores Louise Sutton

November 1, 2023

MONROE – Delores Louise Sutton, 78, of Monroe, NC passed away peacefully, with her daughter at her side, on November 1, 2023. She was born December 17, 1944, in Rapid City, SD, where her father was stationed during WWII. She grew up in Castlewood, VA and attended Virginia Intermont College. She relocated to the Dayton, OH area where she met her husband, the late Dr. Robert Sutton, and welcomed their daughter, Amelia, whom she raised with joy and kindness. Although she had various jobs in her lifetime, her greatest career was that of a caretaker, including of her husband as he endured cancer, her parents as they aged in Virginia, and, through it all, as a remarkable mostly single mother to her daughter, who grew up believing she could be anything she wanted to be. In her later years, she delighted in the role of “Memaw” to her three grandsons.

She is survived by her daughter, Amelia Sutton, son-in-law, Erik Peterson, and her three grandsons, Oscar, Charles, and George Peterson; her beloved sister, Barbara Salyer; her stepchildren Carla Sutton, Joel Sutton, Craig Sutton, Marlene Renz, and Mary Ann Church and their families; her niece Denise Salyer Dickenson and nephew Michael Salyer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and her parents, Betty Salyer, Edward “Pete” Salyer, and Walter Dolphus Sutherland.

A memorial service will be held at the Morehead Inn on November 12, 2023, at 11:00 AM.

The family is very grateful to the wonderful staff at Woodridge Assisted Living, where she has resided for the past two years, and the care of Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Delores, a lifelong animal lover, to the Humane Society of Charlotte https://humanesocietyofcharlotte.org/give/in-honormemory-of/.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave, Charlotte, NC 29204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

I love the choice of photo on your day of marriage. She was so full of happiness that day for you Amelia , like any mama would be for a beautiful daughter who she loved beyond words getting aligned with someone who matched her daughter’s character. Delores was incredibly thoughtful in those reflections. She was a smart woman.❤️

I have thought of Delores many times over the years, I worked with her and Amelia at Uhlmans Department Store. I can still hear Delores’ laugh… she made such an impact on me and ai loved getting to know her over the years we worked together. The biggest thing I remember was how much she loved Amelia! That girl was the reason Delores got up every day I think. She loved Amelia very much.
Delores was special inside and out and will be very missed. Hugs to you Amelia ❤️
