Anne "Jan" Norman Stedman

September 26, 2023

CHARLOTTE – Anne “Jan” Norman Stedman, 91, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.  She was born in Woodruff, SC on December 21, 1931.

Growing up, Jan lived in Spartanburg, SC and Greenville, SC where she attended Greenville High School.  She graduated from Hollins College in 1954.  Later, she moved to Atlanta, GA, where she taught English.  While living there, her future sister-in-law, Vicki Stedman Clement, set her up on a blind date, Halloween night in 1959.  Jan met her soulmate and love of her life, John Branch Stedman, and five months later, on March 12, 1960, they were married.  They raised their family and built a life together in Charlotte, NC.

As a volunteer, Jan was President of the Junior League of Charlotte.  She also served on the boards of The Nature Museum, Discovery Place, Wing Haven, Historic Rosedale, The NC Museum of History, Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, and The Charlotte Museum of History.  As an entrepreneur, Jan co-authored the book, Christmas Favorites, which sold thousands of copies at stores across the southeast.  Jan also co-created the Mistletoe Show, a Christmas event that brought together specialty shops to sell their goods.

Jan’s greatest success was being a kind, supportive, and loving mother and grandmother.  Her happiest times were spent with family. Trips with her husband, John, and her kids and grandchildren to Long Beach, Litchfield Beach, and Linville were always a highlight.  After the passing of her husband, she would take her family on an annual trip somewhere tropical so they could all spend quality time laughing and loving each other. Family was always first!

Jan is survived by her sons, John B. Stedman, Jr and his wife, Julie of Charlotte and David N. Stedman and his wife, Caroline of Charlotte and five grandchildren, Jacqueline Stedman, Liza Prieb and her husband, Walker, Isabel Stedman, Anne Gray Stedman and John Branch Stedman II.  Jan was predeceased by her beloved husband, John, and her parents, Jacque and Anne.

In remembering Jan, we honor a driven and smart woman of integrity who had a kind heart, a positive disposition and a love for family and friends.

The family would like to give special thanks to her caregivers, particularly Kisha Funderburk.

A service celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, October 16, 2023, at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, Charlotte, NC.  The family will receive friends following the service in Oxford Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Jan to Discovery Place Nature, 1658 Sterling Road, Charlotte, NC 28209 or Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Inc., 601 E. 5th Street, Suite, 300, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
