Mary Vincent Sumner

May 13, 2023

Mary Vincent Sumner, 78, of Charlotte, NC died on May 13, 2023 after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was born to Thomas and Elizabeth Vincent on March 3, 1945 in Gulfport, Mississippi. Mary grew up in Richmond, VA and graduated from the Collegiate School and later, Salem College.

In 1967, Mary met the love of her life, John Sumner, Jr, while working in Atlanta, GA. They married in August of 1969 and later moved to Charlotte. John’s career took them to New Jersey, Kentucky, Texas, Georgia, and back to North Carolina where Mary enjoyed working in the Annual Giving office at Davidson College.

In her free time Mary enjoyed playing tennis and walking with her uptown Charlotte friends. Some of her fondest memories included spending time with family and friends at Litchfield Beach, hunting shells with the grandchildren, beating anyone in Scrabble that dared to take her on, and quiet time doing puzzles. John lost his battle to cancer in 2017 and since then she has been lovingly cared for by the nurses and staff at Sharon Towers.

Mary is survived by her children Hall (Amy) Sumner of Beaufort, SC, Vince (Amy) Sumner of Charlotte, NC and Elizabeth Chambers of Washington, DC, a sister Weezie (Buck) Wiltshire of Richmond, VA and 5 grandchildren, Mary Claire Sumner of Nashville, TN, Lillian Sumner of Beaufort, SC, Mabry Sumner of Charlotte, NC, Ainsley Sumner of Charlotte, NC and Jack Sumner of Beaufort, SC.

The family would like to thank Sharon Towers, especially Paige Lowe and Christine Fox, for the expectational care Mary received. A memorial service for the family will be held at a later date. In memory of Mary, please consider a gift to Sharon Towers Residence Assistance Fund, 5100 Sharon Road, Charlotte NC 28210 or Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, PO Box 470408, Charlotte NC 28247.

I was so saddened to hear of Mary’s passing. My memories of Mary at Collegiate with me and many of us in the neighborhood from Mooreland farms. We loved walking to school together and spending summers at the pool. Mary made us laugh together until we cried. Her humor was unmatched and I will never forget those fond memories. My love I send to all the family and especially Weezie. Much love,Gray Massie
