Helen Basil

CHARLOTTE – Helen Basil, 92, died at home the evening of Tuesday, April 4, 2023, with her son and caregiver, John by her side. 

Helen was born into the Greek Orthodox faith and was an active member in the church for many years.  To the benefit of her family, she was an excellent at cooking Greek food.  

Helen met her husband, John Basil, Sr. at the University of Miami, FL, and they were married in 1952.  They lived in France in 1953 while John was on active duty in the United States Air Force.  She earned her master’s degree in education at the University of Buffalo, NY, and taught school for ten years before the family moved to Charlotte, NC in 1978.  Helen taught school there for thirty years before finally retiring.  She brought charm and color into the world, and her smile and her love for her two sons will never be forgotten.

Helen is survived by her sons, John Basil, Jr. and William Basil and his family and her sister, Genevieve Catenis.

Funeral Services for Helen will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 600 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC.  The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the church.  Interment will follow at 1:00 PM at Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC.

    John, I'm so sorry for your loss. You and your Mother always had the sweetest smiles when we would see you on our walks around the circle. She was so blessed to have such a loving and caring Son and I pray the wonderful memories of her will bring you peace and comfort during this most difficult time.
