Shirley Campbell Greer

March 23, 2023

Shirley Campbell Greer died peacefully on March 23, 2023. The former Shirley Ann Campbell was born on September 21, 1931 in Statesville NC to Ann Roseman Campbell and Albert Spencer Campbell.

She attended and graduated from Celeste Henkel School in Statesville and subsequently married Paul Stanley Greer. Together they went to Chapel Hill where Paul earned his degree and Shirley took accounting courses and became a lifelong and rabid Tar Heel fan.

The couple then moved to Greenville NC where Shirley went to work in the accounting department at East Carolina University. When the family relocated to Greensboro NC she worked at UNC-G helping put together the budget for the university.

Always wanting to be of service, she was an active volunteer in a number of organizations including Pilot International, Mission Possible prison ministry and her church, as well as her children’s and grandchildren’s schools.

Shirley loved travel and at the age of 87 became the church’s oldest pilgrim when she traveled to Israel with Christ Episcopal Church. She was an avid reader and a decent bridge player. She enjoyed gardening and was blessed with a green thumb.

Shirley was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and amassed a legion of friends in her lifetime.

She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, a son, Danny Albert Ostwalt, and a grandson, Nathan Greer Yorke.

She is survived by a daughter, Paula Greer Yorke (David), a son, Mark Antony Greer (Ginger), and a daughter-in-law, Pattie Keane Ostwalt. She is also survived by grandchildren Spencer Yorke, Campbell Greer, Nathan Greer, Christopher Ostwalt and Danielle Ostwalt. She leaves behind five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte.  Intermenrt will be earlier in the day in Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, NC.

The family was incredibly blessed to have two angels, Shana and Selena who lovingly cared for Shirley and are now like family. We would like to express our gratitude to the entire Wellmore Daniel Island staff who do such a wonderful job and to Crescent Hospice of Charleston.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Nathan Greer Yorke computer lab in Costa Rica, c/o Christ Episcopal Church, 1214 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28207 or to Crescent Hospice of Charleston, 4401 Belle Oaks Dr., Suite 105, Charleston, SC 29405.

Sending much affection and sympathy to Paula and Mark, and all who loved Shirley as much as I. Shirley and I shared a whole lotta time together at UNCG, and were faithful friends despite our majorly-different and much-celebrated political differences! (We did agree on our love for UNC sports teams, and many other matters.) I have dozens of funny stories that she and I shared over those blissful years at UNCG; her work was impeccable and precise, and her love for others was abundantly shared. May her memory be eternal.

A beautiful lady. I met Shirley through Vivian Moose, a dear friend. It was my pleasure to spend time with both of them. So sorry for your loss. With love and sympathy.

Shirley was a woman to be admired. I knew Shirley in her role as a devoted mother and grandmother. Paula and all, you were very blessed to have such a loving mother who was so supportive in all your endeavors. I know you will miss her but I am sure you will revisit wonderful Shirley memories over and over as you move forward in your lives. Peace and God’s grace to each of you.

Shirley was a fun loving sister-in-law that you were compelled to love at first sight. And I was a lifelong victim from 1957. She had a storehouse of talent and terrible at playing dumb! She found her niche soon after she and Paul relocated. Her personality perfectly complimented her husband’s “Used Car Salesman” talent. Sincere condolences to Paula, Mark and family.
