Nancy Curtis Blaine

March 15, 2023

CHARLOTTE – Nancy Curtis Blaine, 92, died on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at her home.  She was born on October 24, 1930, in Baltimore, MD to the late Franklin O. Curtis and Gladys Powell Curtis.

Nancy Jean grew up in Baltimore, graduating from Roland Park Country School.  She then attended Goucher College and graduated in May of 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology.  Nancy met the love of her life, Darwin James Blaine, on a blind date in 1949.  They were married in Baltimore December 29, 1951.

All three of Nancy and Darwin’s children were born in Baltimore.  In 1965, Darwin’s job transferred him to Charlotte where they have lived ever since.  The family joined Myers Park Presbyterian Church in 1966 where Nancy became involved in the choir, Women of the Church, various Women’s Circles and Sunday School classes.  She tutored at Seigle Avenue and Billingsville through MPPC and volunteered at the Nature Museum (Discovery Nature) and the PTA.  Up until the time of the pandemic, Nancy made casseroles for the homeless shelter and volunteered at Loaves & Fishes food pantry.  Nancy and Darwin enjoyed playing golf together, going up to their beach house in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and spending time with family.

Nancy is survived by her three children, Darwin Blaine, Jr., Curtis Blaine and his wife, Peggy, Allyson Haenlein and her husband, Walter; grandchildren, Andrew Blaine (Samantha), Curtis Blaine (Jenny), Rush Blaine, Mary Stevens Phillips (Matthew), James Haenlein (Aubrey), Jackie Haenlein, Nadine Sharp (Kristian) and Katherine Haenlein; three great-grandchildren, Blaine and Josie Phillips and Wyatt Haenlein.  Also surviving are her sisters-in-law, Yvonne Blaine and Carol Curtis and nieces, Barbara Chapman, Nancy Blaine, and nephew, Neill Curtis.

Her eight grandchildren will greatly miss their Grandom, who took them to countless Lollipop concerts and plays at the Children’s Theatre along with visits to Ben & Jerry’s afterwards.  Yoo-Hoo’s were always a staple at her house, the last few were used to toast her just a few weeks ago. Mom, your smile is now shining in heaven.  Cheers to you and Dad.

A service to celebrate the life of Nancy Curtis Blaine will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 27, 2023, at Myers Park Presbyterian Church.  The family will receive friends following the service in Oxford Hall.

Keeping all of the Blain Family in our thoughts and prayers. We got to know Nancy during the pandemic via our morning prayer as we read the whole Bible thought the year. Every morning it was a joy to see and hear from Nancy. She always had such a great sense of humor and positive and joyful presence that she shared with all of us.

Nancy Curtis Blaine sat behind my wife, Arlene, and me at the Sunday Church. She went to school down the street from me In Baltimore, MD.
She had the nicest smile. She may not be with us in body anymore but will always be with us in spirit.
    Thx, Nancy
