Athena "Tina" Balosos

February 13, 2023

CHARLOTTE – Athena “Tina” Balosos passed away on Monday, February 13, 2023 surrounded by her family.  She was born in Athens, Greece and immigrated as a young child with her family, first to New York through her early teenage years, and eventually to Charlotte, NC.

Tina was a mother, wife, daughter, sister, grandmother, and friend, who suffered from a chronic illness that ultimately ended her life.  She fought her illness bravely and valiantly for over twenty-seven years.  During this span, she underwent over twenty surgeries.  She spent more holidays, birthdays, anniversaries in ICU than not, and eventually suffered from multi-organ failure in her last week.

Tina was someone you gravitated towards and had a spirit that drew people from all walks of life.  Her smile electrified a room.  Tina’s laugh was infectious and her contagiously positive influence was an inspiration to anyone that knew her.  She was an outgoing person, who never met anyone she did not love and befriend. Tina was an avid gardener, who always grew her own vegetables, and loved to cook for big get-togethers (her home was always open for family and the multitude of friends). She was known for years for her weekend cookouts with neighbors.

Tina always loved and was proud of her Greek heritage and devoted to her Orthodox faith. She was a member of both Holy Trinity and St. Nektarios up until her health condition allowed.  She was a member of Philoptochos, served as a Sunday school teacher, pre-school and Greek school Board Member, and volunteered many years at the church bookstore and Greek Festival.

Tina was an Executive with First Union Bank until her health condition forced her into disability.

Tina is survived by her husband of 31 years, Christos George Balosos; children, Demetrios Koutsopoulos, George Koutsopoulos and his wife, Tahis and Cassandra Balosos; grandson and the love of her life, Nikos Koutsopoulos; siblings, Cathy Poulimenos and her husband, Chris, Bill Tasios and his wife, Kalliroe.  Also surviving are her uncle, Demetrios Makrigiannis and his wife, Eleni; aunt, Maria Tasios Plakas along with many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and abundance of friends. She was predeceased by her loving parents, Georgios Vasileios Tasios and Vasiliki Makrigiannis Tasios; father-in-law, who adored her, Georgios Balosos and aunt/second mother, Fotini Makrigiannis.

Her family would like to offer their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the ICU medical staff at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center who, during her last hospitalization had become dear friends and extended family.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM on Monday, February 20, 2023, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 600 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Tina to the St. Hermione Home, PO Box 79177, Charlotte, NC 28271 or https://www.sthhome.com/

May Her Memory Be Eternal.

Tina, thank you for the kindness you showed me, even though you were constantly in great pain and discomfort. You are and will always be an inspiration to those who came to know you . Your smile through it all was a testament of your strength and your love for Life, Family and Friends. Your determination to live and defy the odds as long as possible is a great example to follow. You will missed. Now that your struggle is over, may you find your peace in the loving arms of God through Our Lord Jesus Christ.
