Marie Anne Daniels
February 10, 2023
CHARLOTTE – Marie Anne Daniels passed away Friday, February 10, 2023, being comforted by her family as she made the transition to heaven. Marie Anne was born January 4, 1932, in Hickory, NC to Hans and Clara Scheller. The family moved to Greenville, NC in her teenage years.
Marie Anne graduated from Greenville High School and then Duke University. She moved to New York City and was employed with Eliot Janeway, an economist. Through a mutual friend, she met a young man named Gene Daniels from North Carolina who also had moved to New York for a job. Shortly after they began dating, Gene was drafted into the Army and received orders to leave for Germany. Within one week they were married in Greenville, NC and Gene left for Germany. Marie Anne soon followed and they spent their first year of marriage in Germany.
Upon returning to the United States, they made their home briefly in New Jersey until Gene took a job in Charlotte. While in Charlotte they had two sons, Eric and Kevin. Marie Anne focused on her family while volunteering at schools and the Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center. She also supported Eric and Kevin in Scouts, swimming and tennis. Olde Providence Swim and Racquet Club was the home court; she and Gene continued their membership even while living in Greensboro for ten years. The Thursday Night Tennis “TNT” group and her “BLT” Bridge Lunch and Tennis group provided strong friendships that started on the tennis courts and continued for a lifetime. Representing Olde Providence, Charlotte Country Club and Greensboro Country Club, she flourished on the tennis court playing numerous tournaments throughout North Carolina. Marie Anne and Gene later returned to Charlotte and built their permanent home on Lake Wylie. They continued their love of water at their home at Ocean Isle Beach, including 30 consecutive years of Daniels Family Beach Week.
Marie Anne will be remembered for her strict adherence to grammar (a stickler for proper use of pronouns and who vs. whom) and for her high expectations of her grandchildren at Camp Lake Wylie including daily chores but also filled with fun activities and trips. Using memories of her own camp days at Camp Pinnacle in the 1940’s, the grandchildren learned many songs and games. Marie Anne in her elderly years continued to amaze her family with camp songs such as “Ain’t It Great to Be Crazy!”
Marie Anne is survived by her husband, Gene Daniels; sons, Eric Daniels and his wife, Melba and Kevin Daniels and his wife, Amy; her grandchildren, Jenna Cooper and her husband, Ben, Diana Knudsen and her husband, Stephen, Wilson Daniels and his wife, Katharine, Leighton Daniels and his wife, Emily and David Daniels and his wife, Taylor; her great-grandchildren, Hadley and Beckett Cooper, Maisie Knudsen, Sadie Daniels, Carder and Andie Daniels and her seventh great-grandchild who is due any day. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Marie Anne was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Rudolf Scheller and his wife, Lois.
The family expresses their appreciation to her companions Mary John Boswell and Laura Van Landingham for providing devoted care for the past 18 months.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Charlotte, NC where Gene and Marie Anne have been long-time members. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Marie Anne to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207 or Christ Lutheran Church, 4519 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226 or Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, 102 Main Street, Suite 100, McAdenville, NC 28101.
Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

Marie Anne was always the kindest person to the young kids growing up playing tennis at Olde Providence. She was one of my mother Sally’s favorite people on and off the court, and I know they are probably in a third set tie-breaker in heaven right now. She was a beautiful person with a beautiful tennis game, and though fiercely competitive, always exemplified great sportsmanship and grace on the court. She was a great example and matriarch for the young female players at O.P. Wishing the family strength as you mourn her loss. Game, set and match Mrs. Daniels.
