Lucille Malatras

CHARLOTTE – Lucille Malatras passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2023.  She is now rejoined with her dearly missed daughter, Toni Elizabeth and husband, John Demosthenes Malatras who predeceased her.

Lu was born and grew up near Roanoke, VA where she graduated from Rocky Mt. High School and then attended Secretarial School in Martinsville, VA.  She then moved to Washington, DC where she met John and was married at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox church.  After moving to Charlotte in the late 1960's Lu was very involved with volunteer work at her children's schools and church.  John and Lu celebrated sixty-five years of marriage together.  She retired from the American Red Cross where she enjoyed being part of an international non-profit organization which helped those in need.  Lu was an avid gardener as well as a very talented cook where through the years John and her enjoyed entertaining.  She was and active member at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Charlotte and loved being part of the annual bake sale and festival.  She was a kind and loving woman who will be dearly missed.

Lu is survived by her son, Mark Malatras and his wife, Christine; grandchildren, John and Katherine.  Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Lula Strachan and many nephews and nieces.   Lu was predeceased by her parents, Clara and Cliford Clemons; two sisters and four brothers.

The family would like to express their appreciation to all of Lu's caregivers.  

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Charlotte, NC.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.  The service will be livestreamed at: https://vimeo.com/event/165729/457c79a80e for those unable to attend in person. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Lu to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Attn: Foundation or Main Altar Restoration Fund, 600 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC  28203.

    Mark, Christine, John and Katherine, Lu was a gracious lady. She welcomed me to Charlotte and to Holy Trinity when I first moved to the Queen City. It comforts me to know that she and John will be reunited. May her memory be everlasting.
