Barbara Jean Thomas Hautau

December 8, 2022

CHARLOTTE – Barbara Jean Thomas Hautau left her wheelchair-bound body and walked into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, December 8, 2022.  She was born on July 29, 1946, to Pearl and Willard Thomas.

Barbara grew up in Ohio and West Virginia.  She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Greensboro and went on to serve as the vice president and assistant secretary for the Foundation For The Carolinas from 1974-1989.

In 1979, Barbara was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.  In the years that followed, Barbara came to the Lord and felt God’s call to serve people with disabilities.  Barbara and her husband started the MS Christian Fellowship, a support group in Charlotte for others with MS.  The support group continues to meet to this day.  They also became involved with the Joni and Friends ministry, serving families affected by special needs.  Throughout her years with MS, Barbara clung tightly to the faith she found years ago.  This faith sustained her during life’s hardest moments and inspired every person she encountered.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 37 years, Herb Hautau; daughters, Michelle McGee and Lynn Rogers and her husband, Scott; son, Ted Hautau and his wife, Jessica; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service for Barbara will be held at 10:00 AM on December 17, 2022, at New City Church, 2500 Carmel Road in Charlotte, NC.  The family will receive friends following the service at the church.  The service will be livestreamed at: http://newcity.us/eventstream for those unable to attend in person.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in Barbara’s memory to Joni and Friends, 616 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd #A, Matthews, NC 28105.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
