Sharon Louise Scott McKnight

November 24, 2022

Sharon Louise Scott McKnight, born July 16, 1947, died November 24, 2022 (75 years), was born to William Warren and Laura Jean Scott of Linden, Alabama. She grew up in Marengo County, Alabama and graduated valedictorian of Linden High School. Thereafter, she attended Converse Women’s College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, before graduating from the University of Alabama, where she was an English major. Sharon taught English for several years before dedicating much of her life to raising William Scott (“Scott”) McKnight and Thomas Alexander (“Thomas”) McKnight, Jr., both children of her first marriage.

Sharon lived in Uniontown, Alabama; Chesapeake, Virginia, Chicago, Illinois; Minneapolis, Minnesota and Mount Vernon, Virginia before settling in Charlotte, North Carolina with her husband of over thirty years, R. Keith Richard.

After obtaining her masters degree in social work (at night, as a single parent mother) from Catholic University, Sharon served as a school social worker in Fairfax County, Virginia for 15 years. Following her move to Charlotte, North Carolina, she continued in private practice, and retired after 30 years of service to her clients.

Sharon is survived by her two sons, Scott and Thomas, and their wives Jordan and Kate. She is also survived by Keith’s children David Richard, Joel Richard and Amy Richard Lewis, along with their spouses, Barbara, Kate and Trent, respectively.

Sharon’s heart, dreams and kitchen refrigerator surface were filled with images and love for her grandchildren, which include Robby McKnight, Lawson McKnight, Alice McKnight, Adams McKnight, Aislin Lewis, and Augustus Lewis. Sharon is also survived by her sister, Ann Scott Yelverton, and her aunt, Mary Emily Hudson, as well as her many beloved cousins.

Sharon loved her Methodist church community wherever she lived — most recently Myers Park United Methodist Church. Sharon was also an avid and talented bridge player; she loved to exercise – regularly walking lengthy amounts daily until her recent illness; she enjoyed cooking healthy southern fare; reading with her book club; and visiting her grandchildren.

Sharon had a deep faith and active prayer life. She is undoubtedly now in the arms of her Savior. Her funeral service will be held at Myers Park United Methodist Church, at 2:00 PM on Monday, December 5, 2022.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC, 28207.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC; 28204 (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

Sharon was a great friend to me during our first year of teaching at Western Branch High School in Chesapeake, VA in 1969-70. We enjoyed sharing the French program assignments and carpooling to work during that year, when she also taught English. Sharon was a beautiful, brilliant and gracious Southern lady, a true inspiration. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Much love sent to all who are in mourning at their loss.
