Hubert L. Wilson

Hubert L. Wilson Jr., 97, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2022 at Matthews Glen Retirement Community. He was born on October 4, 1925 in Durham, NC, the son of Hubert L. Wilson Sr. and Betty Stallings Wilson. After graduation from Bragtown High School, he served as an aircraft electrician in the U.S. Army Air Corps in North Africa near the end of World War II. He then attended Duke University, married, and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Hubert worked for Duke Power for 34 years, first in Burlington, NC, where his three children were born, and later in Charlotte, NC where he became the Manager of Distribution Engineering. He was active in Rotary Club, Charlotte Engineers Club, and IEEE. After retirement he led the Duke Power retiree volunteer efforts serving at several local charities. He also honed his woodworking skills to build beautiful pieces of furniture that are treasured by his family. He enjoyed gardening, golf, and travel including trips to the beach with family and trips to national parks, Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand, Scandinavia and Europe. He was a lifelong fan of the Duke Blue Devils and joyously celebrated their victories and championships.

Hubert was a charter member of Trinity Methodist Church in Burlington and served faithfully in many roles at Myers Park UMC in Charlotte. He also did construction work on mission trips to Haiti and Costa Rica.

Hubert is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Nancy Rollins Wilson; three children, Joyce Howard (Jay Jones) of Marietta, GA; Gail Black (Brad Black) of Supply, NC; and Mark Wilson (Robyn Wilson) of Kingsport, TN; seven grandchildren, Dan Howard (Nancy Kilpatrick), Steve Howard (Anne Howard), and Will Howard (Bonnie Howard) of Smyrna, GA, David Black (Jessica Black) of Lilongwe, Malawi, Cathy Buehler (Will Buehler) of Durham,NC, Beth Hobbs (Chris Hobbs) of Kingsport, TN and Chris Wilson (Melissa Wilson) of Blountville, TN, and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Mary Frances Inscoe and Ann Williams.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 27 at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Rd, Charlotte, NC 28207. A reception will follow in Jubilee Hall. The service will be streamed live at https://boxcast.tv/channel/avywlradrkwnpw81mpef.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to the Samaritan Fund at Matthews Glen , 733 Pavilion View Dr., Matthews, NC 28105 or to the Mission and Outreach Fund at Myers Park UMC, 1501 Queens Rd. Charlotte NC 28207.

    Gail, I'm so sorry to hear about your father. I know you will miss him but he will always be with you. I never understood what that means until my parents passed away. He will continue to be a part of your life.
