M. Berry Grant, Jr.

October 26, 2022

CHARLOTTE – Maxwell Berry Grant, Jr., 76, died on Wednesday, October 26, 2022.  He was born in Charlotte, NC on February 4, 1946, the son of Maxwell Berry Grant and Helen Crowell Grant.

Berry spent his childhood in Allentown, PA where his father owned a PepsiCo plant.  The family returned to Charlotte, NC where he spent the majority of his life, considering himself a true “Charlottean”.  He attended Perkiomen Prep School in Pennsburg, PA, where he was the captain of the soccer team, and went on to attend Georgia Tech University in Atlanta, GA.  Berry made lifelong friends at Perkiomen, in Allentown, and Charlotte, and cherished the frequent trips for his “buddies” from Allentown to get together to continue lifelong friendships and memories.

Berry loved and enjoyed attending his children’s sporting events and was always in the stands cheering them on from Elizabeth’s soccer, Leighton’s football, Ashley’s softball, or Sherrill’s volleyball.  He was an avid sports fan, and during football season, he watched all of the alma maters from the family including Georgia Tech, NC State, Hampden-Sydney, East Carolina, University of Tennessee, in addition to the Carolina Panthers.

Berry was an active member of the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta, GA, the Charlotte City Club, and Olde Providence Racquet Club in Charlotte, NC.  He was a past President of the Charlotte Kiwanis Club and served on the Board of Directors for Camp Thunderbird.

Berry was an independent investor and was passionate about monitoring the stock market.  He never missed the closing bell!  Berry was a very charitable individual and enjoyed attending and supporting local organizations such as the Good Fellows Club, YMCA, Myers Park Presbyterian Church, and Charlotte Opera Guild.  He was also passionate about donating to multiple charities and his longtime alma mater, Perkiomen Prep School.

Berry was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  He instilled his generous nature and decency in all that knew and loved him, and his kind heart touched all that encountered him.  As loyal as they come, you could always count on him to be there for you.  He was passionate about simply doing the right thing and helping those that were less fortunate, and was a true Southern gentleman.  A class act and sharply dressed man ready for any occasion, or as he would say “the name is Bond, James Bond” as he’d step out ready for that day’s events.

Berry is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Sheldon Goforth Grant; his beloved children, Elizabeth Grant and Leighton Grant of Asheville, NC, Ashley Schewzyk and her husband, Ollie, of Fort Mill, SC, and Sherrill Hornett and her husband, Clive, of New York, NY; his adoring grandchildren, Brayden and Savannah Schewzyk, and Lucia and Elsie Hornett.  His wife, children, and grandchildren were his greatest pride and joy, and he was overly generous with his love and support to his family and friends.

Funeral services for Berry will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place in Charlotte, NC.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church.  A reception will follow the service in Oxford Hall. The service will be livestreamed at: https://myersparkpres.org/live/ for those unable to attend in person.  Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Berry to the YMCA of Greater Charlotte, 400 E. Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC 28202 (https://www.ymcacharlotte.org/).

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

I was sad to hear of the passing of Berry. We started out as roommates at Perkiomen. We were part of a group of Perkiomen students that went to Europe with Hal Cragin.I met Berry again for our 25th and 50th reunion gatherings at Perkiomen.Berry and I were different but I always liked him.He was always intense and driven to excel. He was small in stature, and great at sports that required agility and quickness like soccer and tennis. I was proud to have known him and to able to share some similar life experiences with him.Berry, the world will miss you.Perkiomen class of 1964?

I was friends with Berry from back in the 70's when we came back to Charlotte after college. He lived at Country Club Arms Condominiums, and I lived next door at Country Club Rockledge next to Myers Park Country Club. Berry met Seldon there where she lived too. I remember his being very active socially, a fun person to be around who enjoyed a good laugh and a spirited conversation. I also knew Berry's parents who lived in Eastover where I went invited with him and other to visit and dine. We stayed in touch over the years. I would see him often at the YMCA on E. Morehead St. We saw each other occasionally thru the years at social events and out dinning with friends and family. He was a great Charlotteann, big fan of his Alma Matera Georgia Tech and one of the regulars at Park Place Pharmacy. He will be missed by all who knew him for his humor and smile.

I only met Berry once or twice after he married my cousin, Sheldon Goforth Grant. I remember him being very nice and that he loved his wife and family fervently. My condolences to Sheldon and family.
