Rajit Verma

November 8, 1987-September 2, 2022

Rajit Verma, 34, passed away Friday morning, September 2, 2022 at his home in Charlotte after a courageous seven month battle with lung cancer. His wife, Mary Elizabeth, and close prep school friends were at his side when he passed. He was born on November 8, 1987 in New Delhi, India to Rajiv and Neeru Verma.

He met the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth McDowell, on the first day of classes at the Gemology Institute of America in 2014 where they both attended and obtained their graduate degrees in Gemology. They were married in Charlotte on November 11, 2017 and in New Delhi on December 4, 2017. They lived in India for two years and moved to Charlotte in late 2019 awaiting the birth of their first daughter, Isabel Neeru on March 30, 2020. They had a second daughter, Mary Alice Bennett on February 7, 2022. Raj was a fun and loving father to Isabel and Mary Alice.

Raj was a fourth generation jeweler, working in the family’s jewelry business (Punjab Jewellers) from an early age. He loved being with his brothers, Amit and Pranit. Raj was particularly close to his paternal grandfather, Goverdham Lal Verma. Raj graduated from The Doon School in Dehradun, India in 2005, where he attended from the sixth grade, the Pearl Academy of Design in 2008 and the Gemology Institute of America in 2015. It was Raj and Mary Elizabeth’s dream to start a jewelry business in the US and were making good progress when Raj was diagnosed with lung cancer in January. Raj loved being a father and having a family. He was a kind and gentle man with a heart of gold. He loved keeping in touch with his prep school friends and many had visited him over the past few months upon hearing of his illness. Both his brothers spent considerable time in Charlotte with Raj over the past three months. A dear friend of the family, Palmer Trice, visited him often, praying and studying the Bible with him. He will be sorely missed by all.

Raj is survived by his brothers, Amit (Radhika) and Pranit (fiancé Sanjana), his nephew (Abhiraaj) and his niece (Adira) and his paternal grandmother, Raj Rani Verma, all of New Delhi, along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, his in laws, Whit and Liz McDowell of Charlotte and Peter McDowell of Dallas, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rajiv and Neeru Verma.

A memorial service will be held at 10am on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charlotte with a reception following the service. Memorials may be offered in memory of Rajit Verma to The Doon School, Dehradun, India, www.doonschool.com/alumni/ways-of-giving. I have had you and your family on my mind constantly since seeing your husband's obituary yesterday. There are no words...because there are so many. I lost my husband to lung cancer as well - our children were 6, 4 and 18 months. He lived a year from his diagnosis. Please know I am here if you would ever like to tell your story or share your sadness - I can truly understand all of it. Wishes for comfort and peace as so many are holding you up during this most difficiult time.

We are heartbroken with the loss of Raj Verma one of the most beautiful, warm and gentle humans to walk this earth. He stole our hearts the minute he walked through our door here in San Diego with our niece Mary Elizabeth. It was clear that Raj had already stolen her heart, and their fairy tale romance was a joy to witness. Our hearts go out to both of his families but hope that sweet memories of Raj will be a comfort. He leaves a precious legacy in his two little girls that we can all be grateful for. Raj we love you and miss you. May you Rest In Peace.

Raj and Mary Liz are very close friends of our daughter Monica Bern. We were fortunate enough to meet Raj and Mary Liz at the GIA graduation And spend time with them at our daughters wedding. We have been brokenhearted since we heard of Raj’s diagnosis. He was an amazing person and he had so much ahead of him with his beautiful wife and gorgeous daughters. We pray for them and him and pray that Raj rests in eternal peace. Sending our love to Mary Liz, Isabel, Mary Alice and all his family and friends. Marcy and Rick Bern
