Thomas R. Ferguson, Jr.

August 14, 2022

CHARLOTTE – Thomas R. Ferguson, Jr., of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, August 14, 2022.

Tom was President and Owner of Creative Advertising Ideas for more than fifty years.  He loved his work and cherished going to his office each day.  Tom was never happier than when around his family and many friends.  He delighted in the many organizations he joined and the friends he made.  He was President of the Charlotte Sales and Marketing Executives, President of the Charlotte Sportsman’s Club, a Board Member of the Charlotte Ad Club, on the Board of the Eastover Residents’ Association, and a member of Good Fellows, Charlotte Country Club, and Figure Eight Island Yacht Club.

He also coached all four of his children in various sports, with a special love for their t-ball and softball endeavors.

Tom was a long-time member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he served as an usher and a lector, as well as a member of the Outreach Committee and Stewardship Committee.  One of his greater joys was being Chairman of Christ Church Kindergarten.

Tom was a lifelong fan of the University of North Carolina Tarheels, where he was a third-generation graduate and a member of Chi Psi fraternity.  He was President of the UNC Mecklenburg Rams Club.

Tom is survived by his wife, Barb; his four children, Alison Mays and her husband, Michael, Meredith Fontenot and her husband, Alan, Russ Ferguson and his wife, Claire, and Lauren Ferguson; four grandchildren, Lillian LaPointe Fontenot, John Donahue Mays, Anne Marks Mays, and Murphy Bea Ferguson. Also surviving are his sister, Mary McGee and her husband, Joseph, and niece, Hillary Lacouture.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte.  The family will receive friends at a reception following the service at the church.

Tom passed away after a four-year—and, until recently, largely successful—battle with pancreatic cancer.  Memorials may be offered in memory of him to Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 415 Crossways Park Drive, Suite D, Woodbury, NY 11797 or Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28207 or the UNC Educational Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 2446, Chapel Hill, NC 27515.

    Dear Barb and family,
Bob and I were so saddened to hear of Tom's death. We attended the very meaningful Memorial Service celebrating Tom's life yesterday. It became clear to us that Tom was a wonderful man, a stranger to no one and a great husband and father, as well as a successful businessman. Our greatest regret is that we never met Tom.

Please pass on our condolences to your whole family. Barb, Bob and I look forward to seeing you again at Figure 8 when you feel like traveling there again. Your entire family are very much in our thoughts.

    Sincerely, Norinne and Bob Fraser
