Anna Pleasants Collawn

July 8, 2022

Ann Collawn, 92 of Charlotte, NC passed away suddenly and very unexpectedly in her home of 50 years with her son by her side on Friday, July  8, 2022. This was exactly the way she would have planned it and as usual, she got her way!

Ann was born in Durham, NC to James Reid “Pat” and Fern Lashley Pleasants on August 23, 1929. She grew up in Durham, making many lifelong friends and having many adventures. She graduated from Salem College in 1951. Ann taught 2nd grade at Calvert School, now Durham Academy and worked in the President’s office at Duke University. On a lark, she and a friend went to teach in Key West, and there she met and married her husband, Tom Collawn in December, 1958.  After Tom’s naval service was completed, they returned to Durham for his anesthesia residency at Duke University.

After moving to Charlotte in 1961, Ann became involved in the Junior League, the MMAE’s Inn(Hospitality House) and many volunteer activities through the years. She was an active member of the Booster Club at Charlotte Latin and never missed her children’s sporting activities. She loved playing tennis which she continued well into her 70s, playing bridge with her beloved bridge clubs, working puzzles, and doing Sudoku. Currently, she was reading novels on two different Kindles as well as a paperback and could tell every detail of all three. Ann was a devoted grandmother to her six grandchildren and enjoyed being a part of their growing up years. In later years, she took wonderful care of her husband who suffered from dementia. She will be greatly missed by family, friends, and several generations of neighbors. Thank you to all of the neighbors who were such a joy to her and took great care of her!

She is predeceased by her husband, Thomas Herbert Collawn, M.D. and brother, James Reid Pleasants, Jr.   She is survived by her children, James Belknap Collawn, M.D. and wife, Beth of Raleigh, NC and daughter, Anna Collawn Bowden and husband, MacDonald of Davidson, NC.  Also surviving are grandchildren: Emily Collawn Kruse and husband, Alex, Maggie and Anna Collawn, Snow, Reid, and Marianna Bowden. Ann is also survived by her nieces, Lashley Pleasants Russ and Kendrick Pleasants Tatum and husband, Scott of Durham, NC.

Due to COVID concerns, a family graveside service will be held at a later time at Trinity Presbyterian Church where she has been a member for over 50 years. Memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3115 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211 or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC; 28204 (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
