Robert "Bob" Barber Mackey

June 15, 2022

Robert (Bob) Barber Mackey, 89, of Lancaster, SC passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at the Pavilion Health Center at Brightmore in Charlotte, NC. Bob was born on November 4, 1932, in Charlotte, NC, to Jean Hughes and LeConte Mackey and grew up in Lancaster, SC. Shortly after graduating from Lancaster High School, Bob enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Korean War as a Personnelman Seaman of Attack Squadron Sixty-Five, earning a Letter of Commendation.

Following his service in the Navy, Bob attended The University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, graduating in 1959. He remained an avid Gamecock fan all his life. Bob began his career in the residential building industry with Builders Supply Co., eventually starting his own company building homes in Cheraw, SC. He finished his career as the co-owner of a kitchen cabinet dealership in Charlotte, NC with his friend and business partner, Bill McPherson, who preceded him in death.

Bob’s friends would say he was a charismatic guy who always had a smile on his face. He was a stickler for routine and extremely predictable. Bob was always accumulating and trading cars and motorcycles and was loved by car and motorcycle dealers across the Carolinas.

Bob is predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his younger brother, Thomas Hughes Mackey of Linville, NC; Jacqueline Mackey Palmer, mother of his five children: Todd Hughes Mackey and his daughter Morgan Dejesica Mackey of Satellite Beach, FL; Steven Earley Mackey of Princeton, WV; Thomas Barber Mackey, Sr. and his son Thomas Barber Mackey, Jr. of Greenville, SC; Yancey Williams Mackey and his daughters Cameron Hunter Mackey, Elizabeth Earley Mackey, Caroline Lingle Mackey of Charlotte, NC; Jean Meriwether (Mackey) Sheridan and her daughters Carson Meriwether Stephens, Avery Clemons Stephens, and Mackenzie Bryce Stephens of Irmo, SC.

I knew Robert Mackey as the father of my best friend Steve Mackey! We only saw each other a few times while in the company of his son Steve. He was a handsome man, cheerful and very courteous; I remember once, 20 years ago, we all met Robert in a restaurant for Father's Day! Evening in the presence of Robert went perfectly, but one thing connected with his presence really surprised me! Not a single woman could pass by without paying attention to him!
From the words of my friend, I know that he was a very good father, a loving father and all the children loved him very much! Therefore, I can say with confidence that Robert was a good kind man! We will all miss him here on earth! I really want to believe that we will meet in heaven!
