Mary Ann Hamilton Grace

February 25, 2022

CHARLOTTE – Mary Ann Hamilton Grace passed away peacefully Friday, February 25, 2022.  She was born September 7,1935 in Marion, IN to the late Russell and Mary O’Hara Hamilton.

Mary Ann attended Marion High School, St. Mary’s College and received her nursing degree from St. Joseph Nursing School, South Bend, IN.

Mary Ann met Charles “Chuck” Grace while at nursing school in South Bend, Indiana. They married May 3,1958 in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of Notre Dame and started their life together in Columbus, IN.  Mary Ann and Chuck moved seven times with Cummins Engine Company before settling in Charlotte in 1970.  Together, they traveled the world and never met a stranger.  Mary Ann was fortunate to be surrounded by countless friends and neighbors who were great fun and always in search of a ripe tomato when in season.  She was the Mrs. Fix-it in the household and she had one heck of a green thumb.

Mary Ann was an avid golfer and even achieved a hole in one.  She loved board games, puzzles and card games.  She had the luck of the Irish behind her! It is only fitting that her funeral mass will be celebrated on St. Patrick’s Day – her favorite patron Saint and her heritage.  Mary Ann was a proud member of the Dirty Dozen, Quail Hollow Club and Elk River Club.

She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother to eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann is survived by her four children; Mike Grace and his wife, Laura, Mary Beth Hollett and her husband, Peter, Kathleen Moser and Ann Green all of Charlotte; grandchildren, Jim, Betsy, Dan, Patrick, Hamilton, Hannah, Charlie, Mary Grace, Peter, John and Chuck.  Also surviving are her great-grandchildren James and Josephine.  She was predeceased by her husband, Charles; brothers, Francis Hamilton and Patrick Hamilton; sister, Rita Schneiders; grandson, Francis Grace and son-in-law, Rick Moser.

A Funeral Mass to celebrate Mary Ann will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 17, 2022 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road in Charlotte.  Interment will be private at Belmont Abbey Cemetery.  The service will be livestreamed at https://stgabrielchurch.org/livefunerals for those unable to attend in person.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Mary Ann to Holy Angels, 6600 Wilkerson Boulevard, Belmont, NC 28012 and Belmont Abbey College, 100 Belmont-Mt. Holly Road, Belmont, NC 28012.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

Mary Ann was always very supportive and welcoming to my wife Shirley and me when we moved to Charlotte in 1983. She and Chuck were truly great human beings! She will now be reinstated with Chuck in heaven to continue their forever relationship! God bless!!

Mary Ann and Chuck were very kind to Bill and me when we first moved to Charlotte. And, when Bill died, she reached out to me with kind words and support. I will never forget these lovely people and will keep them both in my prayers.

I am a member of Elk River and in times past, I played many golf games with Mary Grace, shared lunch and dinners with her. She was a lovely lady and friend. She was kind to everyone. I am happy that I knew her and that I shared many lovely afternoons at Elk River playing 9 holes. Jen Dudnyk
