Mary Garland Liske

February 21, 2022

CHARLOTTE – Mary Garland Liske, 84, passed away February 21, 2022. Mary was born October 6, 1937. She grew up in Burnsville, North Carolina, and attended the public schools of Yancey County. She graduated from Brevard College where she met her husband, Doyle. After marriage, she and Doyle moved to Chapel Hill where she supported Doyle in his continuing studies there. After his graduation, they moved to Charlotte where she enrolled and graduated from the University of North Carolina – Charlotte with a Bachelor of Science degree. After teaching briefly in the public schools in Charlotte, she continued her teaching career at Providence Day School where she taught science and math for twenty-nine years.

Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed yard work and was a voracious reader. She spent many days on the beach at Surfside Beach, South Carolina, seldom putting a toe in the water, instead reading and enjoying the beach atmosphere. Her interest in learning did not stop in the classroom. Traveling with her husband was a joy to Mary. Together, they visited all fifty states, all the provinces of Canada, all seven continents and over one hundred countries, many of them more than once. One trip took them around the world.

She was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Lee Vaughn. Mary is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Doyle T. Liske, and her son David Liske and his wife Julie. She is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Kyle Liske and wife Mary, Jacob Liske and his partner Anna, Paige Fudge and husband Jonathon and their two children Brently and Hank. She is also survived by the children of her daughter, Sarah Vaughn and husband Carlos, Charlotte Vaughn and Reilly Vaughn. She is also survived by a brother Phillip as well as two sisters, Betsy and Hettie Jo, and beloved aunt Jo Garland. Mary also leaves behind her dearest friend, Mary Lee Haywood.

A gathering to celebrate Mary’s life will be at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at Kenneth Poe Services on Berkeley Avenue.

Memorials to honor Mary may be sent to Providence Day School, 5800 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270.

Mary was a GREAT science teacher engaging her students and growing their interests in the world around them. She loved a good laugh and ALWAYS had a book to recommend. It was a joy to know her a bit more personally as an original member of the Golden Charger Book Club after retirement. It was an honor to call Mary colleague and friend.

My deepest condolences to the family.
I was fortunate to have Mrs. Liske as my sixth grade science teacher (I still remember her class 42 years later). She was gifted and always kind hearted.
