Anne Engle Buker

December 5, 2021

Anne Engle Buker was born to Nora and Claude Engle, both school teachers, who were homesteading a farm in Frannie Wyoming. When she was 7 years old a combination of family illness, area drought and family encouragement resulted in her family moving east to a farm near Westminster Maryland. This relocation allowed holiday and summer visits to Engle family at their homestead in Silver Spring Maryland. Anne followed her brother, David, to University of Maryland and was awarded the remainder of his partial scholarship when he enlisted in WWII. Using this scholarship and her typing skills for the Chemistry and Physics departments at University of Md., she completed her degree. She also participated in the marching band where she met her future husband, Kenneth Buker Jr., when he returned from the war. They were married weeks after she graduated, honeymooning in Niagara Falls. Their marriage spanned 69 years producing three children, Ruth, Mary and Kenneth III. There were work related moves to Lynchburg Va, Greensboro NC, Silver Spring Md and Charlotte NC. At all locations they were heavily involved in the life of their local Methodist church. In 1956 they moved to Charlotte and joined The Owenby Class at Myers Park Methodist Church.

Anne always had an appreciation of nature and the environment, loving identifying local birds, local butterflies, trees and flowing plants. Her grandsons knew that drives home from school would always have a detour to see something of interest with an specimen tree. With an exceptional teacher from Japan, Anne also enjoyed learning Origami.

Anne was preceded in death by her husband Ken C Buker Jr. in 2016, her daughter Mary Buker Sparks in 1995 and her brother James David Engle in 2010.

Survivors include her daughter, Ruth Buker Foushee and her husband Giles of Mooresville NC, her son Kenneth Buker III and his wife Lori of Land O’ Lakes Fla. and son-in-law Dwight Sparks and his wife Elizabeth of Advance NC; six grandchildren: John Giles Foushee III, Madison Steele Foushee, Paul Buker Sparks and his wife Susan, Robert Scott Sparks, Kenneth Cook Buker IV, Emily Buker Odell and her husband Michael and three great granddaughters: Cayden Sparks, Chloe Sparks and Abbie Kate Sparks.
