Sherrill Maynard Capps

October 29, 2021

Sherrill Maynard Capps, 80, of Charlotte, NC died Friday, October 29, 2021. His death was sudden, but we are grateful that he died peacefully surrounded by all his children and grandchildren, exactly as he would have wanted it. Sherrill was born on February 8, 1941 in Clayton, NC to the late Chester and Stella Capps. He grew up in Clayton on the family dairy farm until attending UNC-Chapel Hill. He graduated from UNC in 1963 with a B.S in Accounting and married his High School sweetheart, Mary Joyce Ellis. They were happily married for fifty-nine wonderful years and had two daughters, six beloved grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Following graduation, Sherrill joined a national CPA firm, which is now a part of Ernst & Young, serving on the audit and tax staff for seven years. Sherrill then joined Washburn Graphics in Charlotte as Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Secretary. When Washburn merged in 1984 with Cadmus Communications Corporation in Richmond, Va., Sherrill became Vice President, Secretary and Chief Administrative Officer of Cadmus. In 1992, he joined McGuire Properties as a commercial broker handling land sales and other commercial properties.

Sherrill served as an officer of the Charlotte Chapter of the North Carolina Association of CPAs, was on the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce Board of Advisors, served on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross in Charlotte as well as Goodwill Industries. He also served as Chairman of the Red Cross Blood Program. In 1975, Sherrill was given Honorary Life Membership in the Charlotte Jaycees and was selected as one of ten Outstanding Young Men of Charlotte. He was awarded Most Valuable Commercial Land Broker for 1997 through 2000 and again in 2002 by McGuire Properties and was the top production leader in 2002. Additionally, Sherrill was a Deacon Emeritus at Providence Baptist Church.

His favorite pastime was spending time with his adoring family and he was know as “DAD” to his grandkids and all their friends! He also enjoyed reading, playing golf at Carmel Country Club, fishing at Ocean Isle Beach, riding his bike, and playing croquet. Sherrill never met a stranger and loved people. He had a special gift of making everyone around him feel as if they were the most important person in the room and he was always the life of the party! He and Mary have made so many special, lifelong friends in Charlotte and he will be greatly missed by all!

Sherrill was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Stella Capps. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Mary Joyce Ellis Capps, his two daughters, Lisa Sheltra and Kim Schott, son-in-laws Brian Sheltra and Eric Schott, of Charlotte; grandchildren Mary Arntsen and husband Johnny Arntsen, Blake Sheltra, Christina Truhe and husband Austen Truhe all of Wilmington, NC, Paul Schott and Dallas Williams of West Palm Beach, FL, Mac Schott and wife Sumer Schott of Charlotte and Will Schott of Chapel Hill, NC; as well as his great-granddaughters Ava Joy Arntsen and Myla Mae Schott (due Feb., 2022).

A Celebration of Life will be held at Providence Baptist Church, Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. The family is hosting a Barbeque lunch for everyone following the service on the church grounds. All are welcome! The service will be livestreamed at:

Mary Joyce and family: I have just completed watching Sherrill's funeral service and I believe it was one of the nicest I have ever seen. I knew he was a good guy but was not aware of all his accomplishments until I read his obituary. I don't remember how old I was but do remember when he was born. Jerry stayed with us some during that time. And, I don't remember seeing him since he got grown without a smile on his face. I am Aunt Della's daughter and now live in Mother's house across the street from Lillie's. I remember well when we walked together to school ? many years ago. Sorry I do not have your address so I could send you a note but I wanted to let you know I have been thinking of you a lot lately. May God continue to bless each of you with His grace and mercy.
