Lora Cooper Hamrick

October 26, 2021

CHARLOTTE - Lora Cooper Hamrick passed away on October 26, 2021, at her residence. She was born on March 11, 1939, in Comfort, WV, a daughter of the late Harold and Verna Cooper.

Lora and her sister Joan were raised near Charleston, WV, and Lora attended the University of West Virginia where she met Grant Hamrick, her husband of 56 years. After their marriage Lora and Grant moved to Akron, OH where Lora worked at General Tire while Grant finished his degree in accounting at the University of Akron. While in Akron their first son David was born. After Grant joined Price Waterhouse the family would live in Tampa, FL; Columbia, SC; and Charlotte, NC where their second son Mark was born. While in Columbia, Lora made time to finish her college education, earning a BA in Anthropology from the University of South Carolina with a focus on primate behavior.  She was active in the Charlotte community and served as a volunteer at both the Nature Museum and Discovery Place.   She enjoyed golf, gardening, travel and sharing conversations and laughter with her dear friends. Her book club was an enduring (25+ years) joy as were her Ladies Golf group and her Mahjong partners in Elk River, NC. Lora dearly loved spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren.

Lora is survived by her sister Joan Young of Midland, PA; son Grant David and his wife Amy of Estes Park, CO; son Mark Wesley and his wife Leslie of Augusta, GA; and grandchildren Emma Mahin and Grant Evan. Lora was preceded in death by her husband Grant Lee.

A service to celebrate the life of Lora Cooper Hamrick will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday the 2nd of November at Providence United Methodist Church.  For those unable to attend, the service will be available at https://boxcast.tv/view/lora-hamrick-memorial-service-679117

My heart goes out to all members of this dear sweet family. There would certainly be no way I could begin to put into words how truly sorry I am for your loss. Although I never actually got to meet her, just from reading this and knowing her son Dr. Mark Hamrick, I can imagine the profound difference she made in a lot of lives of people that knew her well. I'm sure her contribution to her community will not soon be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

We were so blessed to know and call Laura and Grant friends for years at Elk River. Laura was a gracious and kind lady and will be very missed. We never realize what a blessing the days are that we share. I always have appreciated a quote by Helen Keller. Especially thinking of the family at this time. “ What we have enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all we love deeply become a part of us” Sincerely , Sally and Vic Miranda

We have had the privilege of knowing Lora over the years when she would visit her son Mark and his family. We were fortunate to get to know her better as we spent a few Thanksgivings celebrating together. She will be remembered by our family as class lady who elevated our holiday table with her warm smile and gentle spirit. Please accept our sincere condolences. Sending much love from The Bentons.
