Georgetta Olive Davis

October 21, 2021

Georgetta Olive Davis, almost 95, died peacefully at her home, on October 21, 2021, surrounded by loving family and caregivers. Born in Fayetteville, NC, her birth coincided with the 7th birthday of her sister, Sarah Lawrence, who currently lives at her home in Sanford at nearly 102 years old. She is predeceased by her husband of 56 years, William A. Davis, Jr, as well as her brothers Percy Wingate Olive and William Sidney Olive, and her sisters Orion Florence Olive, Margaret Newberry, and Mary White and her son-in-law Jay Judson. She is survived by her children Lauren Judson, Kent Davis (Carlos Garcia-Velez) and Dawn Fellers (William Murphy) as well as her grandchildren Davis Judson, Virginia Judson, Charlie Fellers and Hannah Fellers.

Georgia graduated from Women’s College, (now UNC-G) where she was the president of the campus service organization. Her training as a social worker brought her to Charlotte to work for the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services. She joined Myers Park Methodist church in 1950, where she devoted her time to the Ruth Fisher Sunday school class and United Methodist Women, serving as president of both groups. Children were special for her. Not only was she a loving and dedicated mother, she also mentored young, underserved children learning to read, and was a Girl Scout leader. She volunteered at the Charlotte Symphony, the Kemper Open, the Mint Museum, as well as at the Asbury Care Center, where she would visit the elderly living there. Her childhood and early adult encounters with Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt fostered her sense of civic duty. This inspired her to serve for decades as an election poll volunteer.

Georgia always lived younger than her age. She played tennis until she was in her early 80s, usually with significantly younger players. She made friends of all ages, but most importantly she cherished the group of friends she had for 70 years. For all those reasons, she will be missed by many.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Georgia Davis will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 8, 2021, at Myers Park United Methodist Church.   For those unable to attend, you are invited you to view the service via the internet at https://boxcast.tv/channel/avywlradrkwnpw81mpef The family will receive friends in Jubilee Hall following the service.

Interment will be private in Elmwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor can be made to Myers Park United Methodist Church, Music Ministry, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, 28207 or to public TV (PBS local Charlotte station), WTVI, 3242 Commonwealth Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28205.
