Elizabeth Ann Welchman

October 18, 2021

Elizabeth Ann Welchman, 63, of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully on Monday, October 18, 2021 after a 7-month battle with cancer. Liz was born in Portsmouth, England, the daughter of Robert Pearce and the former Verley Edmunds. She was raised in Ebbw Vale, Wales, by her mother and step-father Tony Morris. After graduating from university in Liverpool, England with a degree in Education, she taught mathematics in London prior to taking a 3-year position in Turkey.

There she met her future husband David, an American Air Force officer on temporary duty in Turkey, on a beach by the Mediterranean Sea. A brief intercontinental courtship ensued before they arranged to both live in England, she in London and he in Lakenheath. There the courtship continued, culminating in a wedding in her hometown in Wales, before moving to the USA. Liz was a born teacher, but she also loved travel, the dramatic arts, and many crafts, including needlework, quilting, and knitting. She excelled at everything she tried.

In New Mexico the couple started their family with their first son Evan. Their second son, Dylan, was born shortly thereafter, in Charlotte, NC, David’s hometown. Liz took a break from teaching while the children were young, then rededicated herself to the classroom for the next 20 years.

In addition to her husband and sons, Liz is survived by her mother Verley Morris, stepmother Pauline Pearce, half-siblings Steven, Louise, and Jason Morris, of Ebbw Vale, Alison Starkey of Charlotte, and Nigel Pearce of Portsmouth, England. She also has many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a large network of in-laws and extended family, all of whom she loved dearly.

A celebration of Liz’s life will occur on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.
