Hiram Bailey Turner, Jr.

October 14, 2021

CHARLOTTE – Hiram "H.B." Bailey Turner, Jr., 86, of Charlotte, died peacefully on Thursday, October 14, 2021 after a short stay at The Stewart Health Center at The Cypress in Charlotte.  Born February 9, 1935, he was the son of the late Hiram Bailey Turner, Sr. and Mary Emily Maddox Turner.  H.B. is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Ann Robertson Turner; his two sons, Van Turner and his wife, Linda and Brook Turner and his wife, Deede and his daughter, LuAnn Tucker and her husband, Mark all of Charlotte, NC.  He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Callaway Turner (Carrie), Niki Turner, Becky Turner (Brett), Emily Turner,  Anna Claire Tucker and Hampton Tucker; his sister, Martha Claire Turner Killian and her husband, Sam, of Birmingham, AL and two nieces and a nephew.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann Turner Upchurch.

H.B. met Ann in high school and “courted” her for seven years after meeting on a blind date arranged by his aunt, who was Ann’s debate coach.  He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1957 where he majored in agricultural engineering and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.  H.B. was a lifelong Bulldogs fan and his family thinks it is no coincidence that he died the week the Bulldogs were unanimously ranked #1 in the college football poll.

After graduation, he began a 32-year career with Ralston Purina Company and also served eight years in the Army reserves. Upon early retirement, his next “job” was working in the pro shop at Lagoon Park Golf Course in Montgomery, AL where he combined his love of golf with his love of talking with people.  He was an active member of First Baptist Church Charlotte where he taught fifth grade Sunday School for many years and an active member of First Baptist Church Montgomery while living in Montgomery, AL.  Upon relocating to Charlotte in 2012, he joined Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Huntersville, NC.

The family is grateful for the support and encouragement received from Memory & Movement Charlotte as well as Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region.

A private memorial gathering is planned over Thanksgiving weekend to joyfully celebrate “B.”

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
