Acacio Lawrence Guerra

CHARLOTTE – Acacio Lawrence Guerra, 92, achieved eternal peace on Saturday, August 7, 2021.  Affectionately known as “Casey” or “Sonny”, he passed away under the care of Novant Health Hospice after suffering a stroke.  Casey was born on December 2, 1928, in Wallingford, Connecticut to Jose “Joseph” Guerra and Mary Angela Silva.  He graduated from Lyman Hall High School in Wallingford, Connecticut after being honorably discharged on October 10, 1947, from the U.S. Army under GHQ Special Service Detail as a Bandsman, Saxophone in occupied Japan. For his service he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal.   In 1954, he graduated from SUNY Binghamton – Harpur College with a B.A. in Political Science.  After graduating he joined his family’s business in Wallingford.  He subsequently started his own business in textile manufacturing and was a long-time resident of Jeffersonville, Vermont; Montreal, Quebec; and ultimately Charlotte, North Carolina. 

In his youth, “Sonny” was an avid musician playing saxophone from the tender age of 13 with his uncle Jackie at local clubs and dance halls and then later entertaining occupational forces throughout Japan.  “Casey” was a world traveler visiting Asia, Eastern and Central Europe, West and North Africa, South America and spending significant time in the Caribbean on his sailboat, the “Lucetta”.   He was also an avid reader and spectator of current affairs and politics. 

He leaves behind his loving and patient wife of 54 years, Lucette Barber Guerra, his children, Melissa Guerra of New Orleans, Louisiana, Stephanie Guerra-Hadley of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and her husband Kelsey, Drew Guerra of Montreal, Quebec and his wife, Christine, and Darryl Guerra of Rindge, New Hampshire and his wife Hyam and 16 grandchildren.  He is predeceased by his sisters Cristalia Guerra, Brasilena “Lena” Correia, and Dorothy “Tata” Nielsen, and his children, Durwood Guerra, Claudia Guerra, and Acacia Guerra. 

Acacio Guerra’s life will be celebrated on August 16, 2021 at 1:30 pm at a mass officiated by Fr. Joshua Voitus at St. Vincent de Paul Church. 6828 Old Reid Road, Charlotte, NC 28210.  The service will be livestreamed via zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83156187559 .
