Henry Huntley Melvin

August 1, 2021

CHARLOTTE - Henry Huntley Melvin, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2021, in a car accident. He was 20 years old.

Henry was born on July 3, 2001 in Charlotte NC to his beloved parents, Shane and Rita Melvin. Henry was a son, a brother, and friend. He was happy and loved his friends and his family. He was especially close with his brothers and sister. His calm, easy going personality made him easy to love by all that knew him.

Henry graduated Myers Park High School in 2020 and was a rising sophomore at the University of Mississippi, majoring in Sports Analytics. He loved Ole Miss where he spent priceless time with his brother in college and was looking forward to a great football year, because Henry had a deep love for sports and football. For those that know Henry, he had four ACL knee surgeries in both knees in high school which cut his sport-dreams short, but his loyalty remained with the Myers Park Football Family and Coach Scott Chadwick. Henry will always be a Myers Park Mustang!

Henry’s family will tell you he was the quintessential middle child. He was incredibly messy and funny and never, never worried about the small stuff and being under the radar was how he liked it. For his friends he was their go to; to laugh with, to have a poker game with, to catch a game or just hang out and talk about sports.

Henry spent the summer in Charleston SC with some Myers Park buddies with his sister living nearby and as he told his mother last week; “Mom I had the best summer of my life!” He was happy, no worries, no concerns. And that is a Blessing.

Henry is survived by his parents Michael Shane and Rita Blanton Melvin, and three siblings: Michael Shane Melvin Jr., Olivia Constance Melvin, and Brinkley McEachin Melvin. He is also survived by his Beloved paternal grandmother, Harriett Watson Melvin, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Henry was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Charles Henry Melvin, and his maternal grandparents, Ken and Lois Blanton.

A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends in Oxford Hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the MPHS Mustang Club in honor of Henry Melvin. Checks may be sent to MPHS Mustang Club, 2400 Colony Road, Charlotte, NC. 28209. He would love it!

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC; 28204 (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

I was so sorry to learn of the death of Henry Melvin. I knew his grandmother Harriett Melvin here in Lumberton and her son Shane grew up here. I didn't know anyone but Shane and his sister and brothers, but his death at 20 is so sad. Love and prayers to the family.

My heart goes out to you all. You are in my prayers and thoughts. Even though I didn’t know Henry, he certainly was the essence of his Daddy, cousin Shane as I knew throughout our years growing up. Love and hugs to each of you.
