Richard Dale Hoover

July 11, 2021

CHARLOTTE – Richard Dale Hoover passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Richard was born in Fayette, Alabama on January 12, 1950. He was the son of James H. Hoover and Doris Freeman Hoover. Richard grew up in South Charlotte and graduated from Olympic High School where he met “Joni” his wife of 48 years. They were married on Cinco de Mayo and enjoyed celebrating their anniversaries in the Cayman Islands. Richard received an Associate Degree in Computer Science from Central Piedmont Community College. He was employed at McKesson Healthcare Information Services as a Systems Analyst for 40 years.

Richard loved the outdoors - especially camping, boating and golf. He spent many afternoons on the baseball or softball field where he was a dedicated coach and mentor to his players. An avid dog lover, Richard had a special Border Collie, Corky, that he trained for agility competitions. He was a huge University of Alabama sports fan and rarely missed watching a football or softball game. One of his favorite places was his backyard gazebo where he often enjoyed a fine cigar. Richard was kind-hearted, generous, and always willing to help a neighbor; everyone who knew him was better off to have been a part of his life.

Richard leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Joan Helms Hoover; two children, Richard Brent Hoover and Laura Hoover Whitby. He delighted in his three grandchildren: Delaney Whitby, Blakely Whitby, and Davis Whitby who will greatly miss special times with their Pop. Richard is also survived by his two brothers: Harlan Hoover and his wife, Kathy, of Concord, NC and Keith Hoover and his wife, Sharon, of Birmingham, Alabama.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Earle Burgess, Maggie, Pam, and Kendra at Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte.

Interment will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 19, 2021 at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Historic Cemetery, 7407 Steele Creek Road, Charlotte, NC 28273.

A Celebration of Life will follow at 11:00 AM at Steele Creek Presbyterian at Pleasant Hill, 15000 South Tryon Street Charlotte, NC 28278. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Memorials may be made in Richard’s memory to Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Historic Cemetery, 15000 South Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC 28278.

I met Richard 43 years ago when he came to New Smyrna Beach, Florida to install our hospital computer system. Richard’s encompassing personality made him a joy to work with and we stayed in touch all these years. We had some great guy and family ski trips. I’m very sorry for Ricjard’s family’s loss and that we never got to fish for reds in the Lagoon. Richard Hoover, a trusted friend and great person. Prayers for your family, Jimmy Pearsall
