CHARLOTTE – Shannon Christine Wilson passed away on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center.  She was born December 4, 1950 in Shelby, NC to Lewis and Christine "Chris" Wilson from Wilson, NC.

Shannon is survived by her sister, Mary “Cindy" Heacox; nieces, Susan Hitt and her husband, John and Spencer Melton and her husband, Patrick; great-nieces, Sydney Elaine Melton and Ava Christine Melton; her devoted dog, Cooper and many lifelong friends.

Shannon graduated from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, NC with a BA in sociology before beginning a successful career in social services.  She started out as a social worker in Craven County serving senior citizens and disabled adults before going to work for the State of North Carolina as the adult program’s representative for the Division of Aging and Adult Services.  After retiring from the state, she moved to Morehead City in 2004 and accepted a position as the director of the Carteret County Senior Center.  Shannon loved the beach and enjoyed her time there before relocating to Charlotte, NC with her sister in 2015 to be closer to her adoring grand nieces.  She had a distinguished 40+ year career and was the recipient of many awards during that time including the Craven County Meritorious Service Award, Who’s Who of Young American Women and Employee of the Year on numerous occasions.  Shannon was also inducted into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2004.

Shannon lived her life with conviction and in service of others.   She had a passion for life that was contagious, and it was impossible to be in her presence and not have fun.  Shannon was generous, loving and kind. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A celebration of Shannon’s life will be forthcoming at the beach.

I was really hoping to reconnect with Shannon when I discovered she had passed away. She was a wonderful person and a lot of fun. I worked with her at social devices in Craven county from 1976 to 1984. She was a hard worker and had a great live for her family. I know that her niece Spencer was very special to her back in the day. I tried to reach out earlier but could not seem to find her until today.

So sad to see this. I had hoped to reconnect with Shannon. I knew her in the late '70s into the mid-'80s. She was a beautiful, loving, and giving person. For the first few years I knew her she was involved with a fellow Marine. After that, I returned to the area and was in touch with her infrequently.
My prayers are with her family that they can find many joyous memories with Shannon to keep them going. I will do the same.
    Rest in peace old friend!

I worked with Shannon at Craven DSS and with NC DSS. She cared deeply about others and had a wonderful laugh. Gracious lady.
